Northwest’s Cayce Breblau on Wednesday signed to play baseball with Austin Peay and Gary McClure on the first day on National Signing Day.

Bredlau chose Austin Peay over UT Martin.

“It was a tough choice, but I just fell in love with Austin Peay,” Bredlau told ‘From the Sideline’ on WJZM on Wednesday.

Bredlau, who had a .358 batting average, was a key cog in Northwest’s turnaround under coach Dan Stephens that saw the Vikings advance to the Region 5-AAA semifinals where they lost to Mt. Juliet 10-2.

It was the first time a Northwest baseball team had advanced to Region play in 23 years. Northwest was the District 10-AAA runner up to Rossview.

Coach Stephens told ‘From the Sideline’ that he was proud of Cayce and the he’s the first baseball player at Northwest to sign a Division I scholarship in some time.

“He can be a role model for other baseball players that come through our program,” Stephens said on From the Sideline on Wednesday.

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - After her first week of playing college basketball at Tennessee, Bashaara Graves is already drawing rave reviews. The 6-foot-2 forward/center from Clarksville, Tenn., was named this week’s SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Through two games, the Clarksville High School graduate is averaging a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading the Lady Volunteers in both categories.

Getting her first career start on the road at Georgia Tech on Sunday, Graves helped (then) #20/16 UT topple the (then) #22/20 Yellow Jackets, 71-54, as GT played its first-ever game in McCamish Pavilion. The rookie produced team-leading and career-high totals of 18 points and 12 rebounds (seven of them offensive) in 27 minutes as Tennessee improved to 1-1 on the season.

Graves’ early play was key to UT getting off to a good start, as she had totaled 14 points and eight boards in 16 first-half minutes, hitting seven of 12 shots from the field. Graves also added four steals and helped the Big Orange employ an effective 2-3 zone that led to a 45-30 halftime lead and 24-point second-half advantage over a program that went to the Sweet 16 last season.

In her college debut, Graves came off the bench to finish with 14 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes of play in the 80-71 loss to Chattanooga on Friday night.

Graves and her teammates are preparing for their home opener on Thursday night, as they welcome Rice to town for a 7 p.m. contest at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tickets are available at UTTix.com.

        By Florine Hurdle

The South Warren Spartans won in great defensive-style over the Ft. Campbell Falcons 24-7 Friday night at Fryar Stadium in a Class 3A playoff game.

The Ft. Campbell Falcons (9-3) won the toss and chose to receive the ball, however their time of possession came to a halt with a 3 and out.

And with 3:03 in the first quarter, South Warren’s Andrew Upton kicked a 21-yard field goal. It gave the Spartans an early lead 3-0. The drive took 4 plays and 4 yards.

At the end of the first quarter, Fort Campbell attempted a great drive but got stopped right at the end. The Falcons did not have good field position at all in the first half, and could not get past the 50-yard line at all.

“They had a good game plan,” said FCHS coach Shawn Berner, “and so we had to change our scheme a little bit differently.”

With 8:59 in the second quarter, Ft. Campbell’s Jonathan Jethroe broke free for a 45-yard touchdown.  David Sahms kick was good and put them up on top 7-3. The scoring drive took 4 plays and 55 yards.

Then with 2:58 left in the second quarter, South Warren’s Jay Eblen handed Toryn Cornell the ball for a 25-yard touchdown. Jacob Vaughn’s kick was good and put the lead back to 10-7 at halftime. The drive took 10 plays and 80 yards.

As the 2nd half went underway, the Falcons kicked to South Warren’s 9 yard line. South Warren punched the ball on the ground and chipped away 5 to 6 yards all the way down the field.

With 5:16 in the third quarter, Eblen rolled left and threw a 24-yard pass to Lucas Holland for a touchdown. Upton’s kick was good and extended their lead 17-7. The scoring drive took 15 plays and total of 91 yards. Big key here was the time of possession of 6:45.

The Falcons had only one possession in the quarter and South Warren just kept the ball and punched the ball on the ground and ate up the clock to close up the quarter. The Falcons defensive was on the field most of the game and fatigue had set in.

With 8 minutes in the fourth quarter, Eblen kept the ball for a 7-yard touchdown. Upton’s extra point was good and pushed the lead to 24-7. The scoring drive took 14 plays and 75 yards.

With 5:28 in the fourth quarter, Jethroe threw his first interception on the year. South Warren took the rest of the quarter and chipped away with keeping the ball on the ground and ate up the clock.  The final score was 24-7.

As the season closed tonight for the Senior Falcons on the team, one has to look forward to the next year.

“We have a young group of guys for next year,” said Berner, “and I look forward to a great offseason of training and starting in July.”

Kenwood did its best to stay with undefeated Beech, but the host Buccaneers proved to be too much and outpaced the Knights 64-28 in a Class 5A first round playoff game Friday night.

The Knights, who were in the playoffs for the first time since 2007, end the season at 5-6.

Beech (11-0) will move and host Hillsboro (6-4), a 17-12 winner over Antioch, next Friday night, .

Beech went up 15-0 with  5:20 left in first on Parker Campbell’s 17-yd  run. The Bucs cnoverted a 2-pt play on their first touchdown.

Beech made it 22-6 with 2:22 to go in the first quarter on Dorian Carter’s run.

Kenwood cut it to 22-14 with 11:33 left in second quarter on Malcolm Perry’s 7-yard pass to Sam Lipsey and the 2-pt conversion

But Campbell’s 16 yard run put the Bucs up 29-14 with 8:03 left in second quarter and after the extra point.

Kenwood answered on Maleek Hall’s 80-yard sprint and the subsequent 2-pt conversion pass sliced Beech’s lead to 29-22 with7:47 left in the second.

Beech’s Jalen Hurd ran in from six yards out and caught a 14-yd pass that put Beech 43-22 with 1:06 to go before halftime.

Beech opened the scoring in the third when Carter scampered 31 yards and the following PAT gave Beech a 50-22 edge with 7:18 left in third.

Kenwood scored for the last time when Malcolm Perry hit Maleek Perry for a 31-yard strike and after the kick cut Beech’s lead to 50-28 with 4:47 left in the third.

Beech scored once more in the third and fourth quarters to seal the win.
