The Sounds got off to a quick start against Iowa left-hander Brooks Raley (5-5), plating two runs in the top of the first inning.

Nashville loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of walks followed by an opposite-field Blake Lalli single to left. Sean Halton was subsequently hit by a Raley pitch to drive home the first run of the contest. Hunter Morris followed and grounded into a double play, with Khris Davis (2-for-2) scoring from third on the play to make it a 2-0 contest.

The I-Cubs responded in the home half of the opening frame. Logan Watkins led off with a triple to right off Narveson and scored on a Donnie Murphy groundout to cut the Sounds’ lead to 2-1.

The Sounds increased their lead to 5-1 in the third with three two-out runs off Raley. After Nashville loaded the bases on a Khris Davis double and a pair of walks, Cole Garner plated a pair of runs with a two-out, bases-loaded single up the middle. Stephen Parker (2-for-3) followed with a first-pitch RBI single to center.

Iowa rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning against Kyle Heckathorn, plating a pair of runs before leaving the bags full in making it a 5-3 contest.

The I-Cubs loaded the bases with no outs as a result of a single, walk, and throwing error by Parker before former Sound Brad Nelson cut the Nashville lead to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly. Junior Lake followed with an RBI single and Brett Jackson drew a walk to re-load the bags with one out. Heckathorn recovered to retire the next two hitters to escape the inning and protect the two-run lead.

Closer Rob Wooten took over for the Sounds in the seventh. Watkins greeted the right-hander with his second triple of the night and pulled the Cubs within a run at 5-4 when he scored on a Murphy groundout. Wooten retired the next two batters in succession to close out the win and record his 14th save of the year.

Iowa rebounded with a 1-0 victory in the evening’s second game. Three I-Cubs pitchers held the Sounds to only one hit — an Anderson De La Rosa single — in the seven-inning contest.

The game featured a pitchers’ duel between Tyler Thornburg and Barret Loux as neither team scored over the first five innings of action.

Thornburg (0-9) took another in a series of recent hard-luck losses for Nashville, allowing one unearned run on five hits while striking out seven batters over six innings. The game’s only run scored as a result of his own throwing error. Thornburg threw 91 pitches and received credit for a complete game.

With the clubs locked in a scoreless deadlock, Iowa finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth, plating an unearned run follow a throwing error on the Sounds hurler.

Logan Watkins led off the inning with a single. Later, Steve Clevenger hit a one-out comebacker to the mound which should have been an inning-ending double play but Thornburg misfired to second, leaving runners on first and second. Former Sound Brad Nelson drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases for Brent Lillibridge, who fanned for the second out. With pinch-hitter Donnie Murphy at the plate, Thornburg uncorked a wild pitch to allow Watkins to race home with the game’s only run.

Brian Schlitter came on for the bottom of the seventh and retired the Sounds’ 2-3-4 hitters in order to secure his fourth save of the year.

Hisanori Takahashi (1-0) worked one scoreless inning of relief to pick up his first win of the year for Iowa.

The teams continue the series with a 7:05pm meeting on Thursday. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (1-6, 7.77) will toe the slab for the Sounds. Iowa will counter with right-hander Yoanner Negrin (1-2, 3.67).

Box Scores:

Nashville Sounds (25-46) 5, Iowa Cubs (34-38) 4

Derrick, who was a standout Govs receiver during the early 2000s, was hired as APSU’s defensive backfield assistant in 2011. He was shifted to running backs coach last spring.

“It’s a loss to the program,” Cannon said. “He is a quality person and very good coach. “His feeling was that he could change more lives at the high school level and that is an argument you can’t win.”

“I would love for him to stay. He is an alum, he’s got a great vision on what you can do here. He is going to always a great supporter of the program and a great connection,” stated Cannon.

Cannon indicated he will seek a wide receivers coach as Derrick’s replacement. Current wide receiver coach Marcus Gildersleeve, who also will handle offensive coordinator duties, will shift over to running backs.

Collin Welker is two shots back (four-over/75), while Luke Chilcutt (eight-over/79) was the only other golfer to break into the 70’s on June 19th.

In the Girls 18-hole Division, Rippy carded a three-over 74 to top Reagan Greene and Anna Michelle Moore by a shot after they recorded first-rounds of four-over 75.

“I thought I played pretty well today and I was happy with my score,” Rippy said. “I hit a lot of fairways and greens, but I missed a lot of putts – but I made some too – so it all works out.
“Nothing really stood out today, other than on number 12 where I had a bad hole where I hit a bad drive and just didn’t get on the green like I should have.”

But heading into June 20th final round, she knows she still has some work to do.

“I’m going to have to make some more putts than I did today and work on my tempo.
“Sometimes I get the adrenalin going and I start swinging very fast, so I just need to stay level and play the best I can.”

Hanley Long (six-over/77), Mariah Smith (eight-over/79) and Breana Smith (eight-over/79) also finished the opening day with rounds in the 70’s.

In the younger divisions, Sean Gardner leads the Boys nine-hole grouping with a 39 total – two shots better the Bryson Batson’s first-round 41. Wyatt Samuels (45) and Cole Freeman (47) are within eight shots heading into the final round of play.

In the Boy’s Six-Hole Division, Clayton Shenk leads with a total of 31, five shots better than current second-place holder Efrain Figueroa (36).

In the Boys Three-Hole Division, Briley Hagewood’s first-round total of 18 is three shots better than Tyler Kincaid and John Riley Wallace – who both shot 21’s.

On the girls side, the Nine-Hole Division maybe the closely contested grouping of round one, with Kallie Robertson’s 32 leading the division, but everyone in the group is still within two shots.

In the Girls Six-Hole Division, Katie Freeman (36) leads Abby Williams (40) by four shots, while in the Girls Three-Hole Division — Ellie Wiggins (26) had a seven-shot advantage over second-place Emma Markus (33).

Hank Miles Junior City Amateur runs through June 20th.

The last time I was part of this event it was incredible. This is a great thing that brings our people together. The state of Kentucky takes great pride in the facility like it does in basketball, like it does in horseracing, like it does in bourbon.

“The speed of it is what gets everybody hyped and understanding the courage of those drivers. We sit up in the stands and know how fast they are going, yet they have the courage to be inches from each other at that speed and have the vision and wherewithal to say ‘I’m doing this, we’re gonna get this done’. Having a bunch of them that are the best in the world at what they do in one setting like this is going to be unbelievably exciting,” Calipari said.

Calipari guided the 2011-12 Wildcats to the program’s eighth NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship and 15th Final Four appearance. His team, led by Associated Press Player of the Year Anthony Davis and All-American Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, earned 38 victories and posted an unblemished 16-0 Southeastern Conference record.

The coach earned his first national championship after making his second straight and fourth Final Four appearance. He is one of two coaches to lead three different programs to a Final Four. He enters his fifth UK season owning a 123-26 mark with the Wildcats and a 526-164 head coaching record through 21 campaigns.

“We welcome Coach Calipari back to our speedway and look forward to him leading one of the quickest fast breaks in history of our commonwealth,” Kentucky Speedway General Manager Mark Simendinger said.

The Quaker State 400 presented by Advance Auto Parts will be the finale for the speedway’s tripleheader NASCAR weekend. Racing begins Thursday, June 27th with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) UNOH 225 and continues Friday, June 28th with the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Feed The Children 300.

Race tickets, season/weekend ticket packages, and campsites along with daily infield Fan Zone passes that deliver a trackside view of Billy Currington’s Quaker State 400 race-day concert presented by Kroger and driver introductions along with pit road access and more are on sale now at http://www.kentuckyspeedway.com , (859) 578-2300 and the speedway offices at 1 Speedway Drive, Sparta, Ky., 41086, just off Interstate 71, Exit 57 and Ky. border='0' alt='' />
Weaver’s most recent coaching experience was a two-year stint at Harper College in Pallentine, IL, a former junior college national championship program that was dropped after the 2011 season.

Weaver worked in the private sector since early 2012 but jumped at the chance to return to coaching when former mentor Kirby Cannon called.

“Kyran (pronounced Kie-ran) is a good man and was a good player and coach for us at Rolla,” Cannon said. “I never ever remember Kyran Weaver not doing what he was supposed to do. He is just a great example and we need someone like that on our coaching staff who can say ‘I did it this way so you can do it this way.’

“I think he will bring day-in, day-out doing the right thing on the field, off the field and in the classroom. That was a guy who I wanted to bring into the program as my first coaching hire. I feel very lucky to get him.”

Weaver is a certified strength coach and will work with APSU athletics strength and conditioning coordinator Nick Honzik to best assist APSU football players. Prior to being at Harper College, Weaver coached three seasons at this alma mater, Missouri S&T. While with the Miners, Weaver coached the defensive line that proved to be the best against the run in the Great Lakes Football Conference during the 2008 season.

Weaver spent the 2006 season as a student assistant while completing his bachelor’s degree work in biological sciences. He coached the defensive line that season, propelling his desire to enter the coaching profession.

During his S&T career, Weaver played at linebacker and defensive end and had a career-high 47 tackles during the 2002 season. He had 14 tackles and three sacks in his senior year and also had an interception which he returned for a touchdown.

His younger brother Kellen, also played linebacker for the Miners from 2006-09.

A Country Club Hills, IL, native, Weaver forged an impressive football career at Hillcrest High School. He was an honorable mention all-state selection by the Illinois State Coaches Association in 2000 after being twice named to the South Inter-Athletic Association All-Conference (SICA) for his play on the field and his academics. He was chosen SICA Central Conference Player of the Year in 1999 and CBS Prep Star all-region as a senior.

Six former players, three coaches, two technical officials and a contributor composed the class of 2013. The inductees were honored at the House of Basketball – FIBA’s headquarters in Mies, on the outskirts of Geneva, Switzerland. Current Lady Vol Head Coach Holly Warlick attended the induction on Summitt’s behalf.

In addition to Summitt, other inductees included Jean-Jacques Conceiçao of Angola, Australia’s Andrew Gaze, Paula Gonçalves of Brazil, Serbia’s Zoran Slavnic and the USA pair of David Robinson and Teresa Edwards making up the contingent of players. They were joined from the coaching profession by the late John ‘Jack’ Donohue of Canada and Italy’s Cesare Rubini.

Between them, the players and coaches combined for 14 Olympic and eight FIBA World Championship medals.

Technical officials Valentin Lazarov of Bulgaria and Costas Rigas of Greece, along with contributor Aldo Vitale of Italy, rounded out the impressive list.

“The 2013 Class of the FIBA Hall of Fame is truly a special one,” said FIBA Secretary General and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Member Patrick Baumann.

“These are great personalities who have experienced great success on and off the court, but who also stand out for the character they have shown and for the countless efforts they have made to help promote our sport.”

Summitt, well-known for her 1,098-208 collegiate record, eight NCAA titles and 32 combined SEC titles in 38 seasons, also was dominant against the world. She posted an unfathomable international coaching record of 63-4.

Among her top achievements was coaching the U.S. women to gold at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, where her team carried her off the floor after the final game. She also earned a silver medal in 1976 as a player, aiding the runner-up American cause in the first-ever women’s basketball competition at the Games.

Summitt also was chosen to serve as an assistant coach in 1980, but the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Olympiad. The Americans had won the pre-Olympic qualifying title.

Under her leadership, Tennessee put more players on Olympic Teams than any other college program. Fourteen Lady Vols under her watch earned that honor on 19 total occasions.

Outside Olympic competition, Summitt coached the 1983 U.S. World Championship team to a silver medal finish, and she took U.S. National Teams to the 1979 William R. Jones Cup Games, the 1979 World Championships and the 1979 Pan American Games, with her teams returning home with two gold medals and one silver medal.

In 1977, Summitt was given the first U.S. Junior National Team to coach, and she led it to two gold medals in international play.

As a player, she was a member of the 1975 World Championship Team, 1975 U.S. National Team to Taiwan, 1975 Pan American Games Team (gold medal) and the 1973 U.S. World University Games Team (silver medal).

“It’s a tremendous honor for Coach Summitt,” Warlick said. “Obviously, everyone knows about her collegiate career and what she has done. Her international accomplishments as a player and coach are just incredible.

“She played on the first Olympic Team in 1976, and she coached and won a gold medal in 1984 at the Games in Los Angeles. She is an icon, not only in the States, but all over the world. It is a great accomplishment for Coach Summitt, and I was very honored to accept this for her.”

Summitt is the ninth coach inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame. She’s also a member of the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, Women’s Sports Foundation Hall of Fame, National Association for Sport and Physical Education Hall of Fame, Tennessee Women’s Hall of Fame, Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and Lady Vol Hall of Fame.

Utilizing collaborative and interactive learning sessions along with lectures and panel discussions featuring experts in college athletics.

The Center for Coaching Excellence gives college women’s basketball coaches valuable networking opportunities with their peers and top industry leaders.

“I feel very fortunate to have been able to attend The Center for Coaching Excellence,” said Daniels. “In my 17 years of coaching this has to be the most inspiring and eye-opening experience I’ve encountered. Dr. M. Dianne Murphy and Dr. Cathie Siders do an unbelievable job of giving coaches the necessary tools, resources, and advice to be successful and I have gained a whole new insight on myself. I came away from it with a newfound passion that will help in my professional development and I look forward to sharing this valuable information with my staff.”

There is nothing like it for the coaches in any other sport. The WBCA is proud to partner with Columbia University in offering this unique experience to our membership.”

Dr. Cathie T. Siders, a clinical psychologist, organizational consultant and executive coach, facilitated group-learning sessions. Other sessions featured panel discussions from a wide variety of leaders from both the college athletics industry and other sectors of industry.

“Over the past three years, I have been so fortunate to work with nearly 200 of our nation’s college women’s basketball head coaches,” said Siders. “They are truly such wonderful leaders, teachers and mentors. Providing them with the tools they need to be successful is such a rewarding experience for me – and everyone associated with The Center for Coaching Excellence.”

She will be Austin Peay’s first-ever participant in the event. She enters the meet with the field’s sixth-fastest qualifying mark.

“I am extremely proud of Breigh,” said Austin Peay assistant coach Valerie Brown, who will travel with Jones to the event, “She has worked very hard to be in this position. As a coach, my promise to my athletes is to prepare them to be the best they can be, but when you have an athlete like Breigh who puts so much heart into it, the sky is the limit. We are definitely building champions here at Austin Peay, and Breigh is a prime example of what the future holds.

“She beat some of the best athletes in the region in her first appearance at the NCAA Regional. She’s earned this opportunity to be among the best again at the Junior National meet, hoping to capture a spot on the U.S. Junior National squad.”

Jones will face an old nemesis in Des Moines. SIU Edwardsville’s Jessica Oranika was placed third in the 400m dash at May’s Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships but did not qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

The first round of the women’s 400m event will take place at 1:55p.m. (CT), June 21st, with qualifiers moving on to the semifinals scheduled for 7:36p.m. that night. The 400m finals are scheduled to take place at 1:46p.m., June 22nd, with the top six finishers eligible to represent the United States in the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia.

The USATF will provide over 50 hours of coverage on USATF.TV, which is scheduled to go live this week.
