KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee women’s basketball team took some time out of its schedule this week to spread some holiday cheer. The Lady Vols participated in the Big Red Bow Project party at Shannondale Health Care Center in Knoxville.
The Lady Vols were guest volunteers along with staff from Alzheimer’s Tennessee and B97.5’s Jeff Jarnigan, who donned a purple Santa suit, as gifts were delivered to residents of Shannondale. The delivery was one of several conducted for individuals living in facilities in Knox, Blount, Anderson and Loudon counties Wednesday, Dec. 19 through Friday, Dec. 21.
Lexus of Knoxville collected suggested donations from an Alzheimer’s Tennessee “Wish List” for individuals touched by Alzheimer’s and dementia. From November through mid-December, the community responded in a big way. New, donated gifts like CDs/DVDs featuring older music/movies, blankets, scarves, books, craft items and more were dropped off at the dealership and put under the purple “Memory Tree.”
The Lady Vols helped hand out some of those gifts.
“It will warm all of our hearts in the most meaningful way to give the gift of joy to some of our most fragile loved ones,” Alzheimer’s Tennessee Executive Dir. Janice Wade-Whitehead said. “Nobody should have to face Alzheimer’s or dementia alone, especially during the holidays.”

Tickets Go On Sale to Public Friday, Jan. 11; USA Opens 2013 against Scotland on Feb. 9 in Jacksonville, Fla.
CHICAGO (Dec. 20, 2012) – The U.S. Women’s National Team will make a two-game tour of the southeast to open 2013 as a second U.S. WNT match against Scotland has been added on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. The kickoff time at the home of the NFL’s Tennessee Titans and broadcast information will be released at a later date.
U.S. Soccer is celebrating its 100-year Anniversary in 2013 and will host a number of commemorative events throughout the year.
Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, Jan. 11, at 10 a.m. CT through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout Central Tennessee (including Kroger stores) and the LP Field ticket office (open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290. Ultimate Fan Tickets (special VIP packages that include a premium ticket, a custom-made official U.S. National Team jersey with name and number, VIP access to the field before and after the game, and other unique benefits) are also available exclusively through ussoccer.com.
As a sponsor of U.S. Soccer, Visa® is pleased to offer all Visa cardholders access to an advance ticket sale for this match before the sale to the general public. The USA will play its first match of 2013 on Feb. 9 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla. That match will kick off at 5 p.m. ET. The two-game set against Scotland will be the first official games for new U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni and they will come against the country of his birth.
Fans can follow U.S. WNT matches live online via ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker and Twitter @ussoccer_wnt.
Additional Notes
· The Feb. 13 match will mark just the fourth for the U.S. WNT in the state of Tennessee. The USA played two games against Sweden in Chattanooga in 1997 (one of them a closed-door contest) and faced Canada at LP Field (when it was named The Coliseum) on July 2, 2004, in one of the final matches before the 2004 Olympics in Greece.
· The USA has played Scotland in an official match just one time in its history. Scotland visited Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, in September 2002 in what turned out to be an 8-2 victory for the Americans.
· Abby Wambach scored her first career hat trick in that game in Columbus. The goals were just the second, third and fourth of her career. Mia Hamm also had a hat trick in that match, the last of eight that she had in her career.
· Wambach currently has 152 goals, just six short of tying Hamm for the most goals in the history of international soccer.
· Scotland barely missed out on a berth in the 2013 European Championships, coming seconds away from qualifying before giving up a goal in stoppage time of overtime to Spain in the second leg of a two-game playoff.
· The U.S. WNT finished 2012 with a record of 28-1-3 will finish the year at No. 1 in the FIFA Women’s World Rankings.

Austin Peay will try to put behind one of the most difficult defeats in recent memory-certainly at home when it heads up to play Illinois State today at 2:05 on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.
Leading by 12 points with 3:09 remaining, APSU (4-7) failed to score the game’s remainder as Lipscomb rallied for a 87-84 victory as the Bisons scored the game’s final 15 points.
With senior point guard Jerome Clyburn out indefinitely with a hamstring injury and APSU’s other point guards struggling with turnovers, APSU’s coaching staff turned to a player against Lipscomb who joined the Governors practice sessions a little more than a week earlier. Jeremy Purvis, who played at Northeast High School with Kentucky freshman Alex Poythress before playing junior college basketball for two seasons at Jackson State, got the starting nod against Lipscomb. He ended up playing 32 minutes and dishing out five assists. More importantly, he had just one turnover against the Bisons.
Nearly overlooked in the Govs loss against Lipscomb, Wednesday, was the Govs placed five players in double figures for a second time. Anthony Campbell scored a careerbest 25 points while sophomore forward Chris Freeman added 15, also a career high.
In addition, Travis Betran added 14, foul-plagued Chris Horton 12 and Will Triggs 11.
The Govs also placed five players in double figures against Berea earlier this season.
Illinois State was picked to finish second behind heavy favorite Creighton in the Missouri Valley Presason Poll.
Illinois State held on to edge the Dayton Flyers, 74-73, Wednesday night at UD Arena. Dayton missed two potential game-winning shots with less than three second to play.
The Redbirds (8-3) earned their fourth-straight win and second road victory of the season, while the Flyers (8-3) suffered just their second home loss of the year, in front of 11,897. Jackie Carmichael led all scorers with 25 points and 12 rebounds, his third double-double of the season and 24th of his career. Tyler Brown and Jon Ekey also reached double-figures with 16 and 13 points respectively. Dayton’s Kevin Dillard and Dyshawn Pierre each scored a team-high 14 points.
Carmichael, was named preseason All-MVC, and is averaging 18.3 ppg and 7.7 rpg.
First-year head coach Dan Muller replaced Tim Jankovich after the 2011- 12 season. The former Rebird standout spent from 2001-12 as a Vanderbilt assistant.
The Redbirds feature the highest-scoring offense in the MVC, averaging a league-best 80.8 points per game.
Entering the week, Iillinois State’s field goal percentage (50.7 percent) ranked eighth in the nation while their average assist total (17.9) was seventh.
Illinois State’s success this season has been based on 70 points. If the Redbirds reach 70, they win. If not, they lose. ISU is 8-0 when scoring 70 or more and 0-3 when scoring less.

WACO, Texas — Third-ranked Baylor raced out to a 17-0 lead as the Bears ended Tennessee’s seven-game win streak, handing the No. 10 Lady Vols a 76-53 defeat on Tuesday night.
Baylor moved to 9-1 overall, as Brittney Griner tallied 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Kimetria Hayden netted 16 points. Brooklyn Pope corralled a game-best 16 rebounds to go along with 11 points.
Tennessee (7-2) was led by Meighan Simmons, who scored 16 points. Kamiko Williams had a season-high 15 points, two off her career high of 17. Williams posted her first career double-double with a career-high 10 rebounds.
Tennessee played without 6-3 center Isabelle Harrison, who was sidelined with a sprained ankle.
The loss of 23 points equaled the eighth-largest in school history.
Baylor out-rebounded the Lady Vols, 54-47.
The Lady Vols missed their first 11 shots of the game before scoring for the first time, with 13:05 left in the first half, on a Cierra Burdick jumper to make it 17-2.
Tennessee tried to climb out of the early hole, but it proved to be too tall of a mountain.
UT cut the deficit to 12 at 21-9 and 23-11, but Baylor continued its sharp shooting in the first half and regained a 21-point lead at 32-11 on a 3-pointer by Hayden with 6:49 left in the first half. The run expanded to 13-0 to give Baylor a 36-11 lead with five minutes left in the half. Taber Spani ended the drought with a 3-pointer at the four-minute mark.
Tennessee trailed 41-16 at halftime. The 25-point deficit was the largest at halftime in school history. The previous largest margin was 20 against Rutgers in 2009, as the Lady Vols rallied from down 33-13 to win 55-51 on the road.
Both Griner and Hayden had 11 points at halftime.
The Lady Vols began the second half scoring eight of the first 12 points, as Simmons canned a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 45-24.
Tennessee continued to battle and chip away, but the margin never got below 19 points in the second half. A Williams jumper made the score 70-50 with three minutes left. Nia Moore’s layup with 93 seconds left cut the score to 72-53.
The Lady Vols return home to host No. 1 Stanford on Saturday at 4 p.m. The game will air on SportsSouth, MyVLT and the Lady Vol Network.
