Clarksville, TN - Still happily enthralled in the football season, World Series baseball and the leaves changing colors, my ears perked up when they heard the distinct sound of sneakers squeaking on hardwood and the swoosh of a ball going through a net.
The NBA season had begun.
Suddenly, I am looking for my San Antonio Spurs gear (Go Spurs!) and thinking about everything from watching Charles Barkley on TNT to bowl games, NFL playoffs, and March Madness. My fellow sports writers and I can’t help but rub our hands together and grin evilly like super villains with a new plan to take over the world this time of year.
So many sports, with so many games, we can already envision the myriad words our nimble fingers will create dancing across keyboards for the next six months.
I was still smiling from the NBA induced euphoria when I saw the report that one of my favorite NBA players was officially retiring.

Memphis, TN - The Memphis Grizzlies waived Andre Barrett, Melvin Ely, Tony Gaffney and Willie Reed, the team announced today.
Barrett (5-10, 172) logged two minutes in his lone preseason appearance on Oct. 20th at Atlanta. The 31-year-old, who signed with Memphis on Oct. 10th, holds career averages of 3.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 12.2 minutes in 67 games (one start) in four seasons for the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers.
Ely (6-10, 260) averaged 1.3 points and 0.7 rebounds in 6.2 minutes in three preseason games after signing with the Grizzlies on Sept. 29th. The 35-year-old holds career averages of 5.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists on .460 shooting in 16.0 minutes in 373 games (55 starts) over eight seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Bobcats, San Antonio Spurs, New Orleans Hornets and Denver Nuggets. «Read the rest of this article»
Memphis, TN – To celebrate the beginning of the 2013-14 basketball season, the Memphis Grizzlies will treat fans to a free Open Practice starting at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12th at FedExForum.
Fans will get a sneak peek into practice and see all the new and returning Grizzlies players and coaches in action. Beloved mascot Grizz will be up to his normal tricks along with the Grizz Girls, inflatables and more. Media availability will be held on the court at the conclusion of practice at 2:00p.m.
Prior to Open Practice, the Grizzlies will host a Select-A-Seat where fans interested in guaranteeing the best seats to the biggest games can ‘test drive’ seats and purchase Season Tickets or 11- and 20-Game Packs. Memphis, TN -The Memphis Grizzlies today signed free agents Derrick Byars, Melvin Ely and Tony Gaffney. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Also joining the Grizzlies is Josh Akognon (ah-KOY-on), who was claimed off waivers by Memphis on July 23rd after he was waived by the Dallas Mavericks. Akognon (5-11, 185) made three appearances for Dallas as a rookie last season, totaling five points in nine minutes, after signing a 10-day contract on April 3rd 2013 and then signing for the remainder of the season. The 27-year-old has become a prolific scorer in China for the DougGuan New Century Leopards (2010-12) and Liaoning Jiebao Hunters (2012-13). The Grizzlies open their preseason home slate on Oct. 9th against Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks and then welcome Israeli Super League Champion Maccabi Haifa to FedExForum on Oct. 13. Memphis, TN – Memphis Grizzlies Head Coach Dave Joerger and forward Mike Miller are teaming up to offer basketball camps to Mid-South youth on Saturday, Sept. 21st at Memphis University School (6191 Park Ave.).
Joerger and Miller will be available to the media from 11:30a.m. to 12:00p.m. Media is invited to come and get B-roll footage and interviews at this time only.

Memphis, TN - The Memphis Grizzlies announced today that they will hold training camp at the Memorial Gym on the campus of Vanderbilt University (210 25th Avenue S) in Nashville from Oct. 1st-5th.
Before departing for Nashville, the Grizzlies will hold their annual Media Day in Memphis on Monday, Sept. 30th from 10:00am-1:00pm at Fed Ex Forum. Coaches and select members of the front office will be available starting at 10:00am, while players will be available starting at 11:00am.

Memphis, TN – The Grizzlies are set to hit the road with their 2013 Regional Caravan tour beginning Monday, Sept. 9th and continuing throughout the month of September with five scheduled stops.
The caravan will travel throughout the Mid-South region, including Nashville (TN), St. Louis (MO), Jackson (MS), Jackson (TN) and Little Rock (AR) during the month at local attractions and events to get Grizz Nation excited about the upcoming season.
Grizzlies’ guard Quincy Pondexter, team mascot Grizz, members of the Grizz Girls and the Claw Crew will all participate in the regional caravan and invite Grizzlies’ fans of all ages to join them as they near the tip-off of the 2013-14 season.
