The Govs must defeat the Bruins (11-9, 3-1 OVC) and have Jacksonville State defeat Tennessee State to earn a top three spot.
The Govs are in this position thanks to a 4-0 win over Eastern Illinois for their first road win of the season. After dropping the first doubles match, the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs for the Govs came through to deliver a 1-0 advantage.
Timo Kiesslich and Christian Edison won their fifth straight match at the No. 2 spot, the second longest streak for the Govs in three seasons. Almantas Ozelis and Anton Damberg clinched the point with a tiebreak win at No. 1 doubles.
Kiesslich and Edison led the Govs in singles again, with both players winning in straight sets. Kiesslich leads the Govs with a 3-1 record in OVC singles play, while winning four of his last five singles matches. Jacob Lorino clinched the match for the Govs with a win at No. 5 singles, improving his OVC singles record to 2-2.
About the Belmont Bruins
The Bruins are winners of their last three matches and boast the reigning OVC Player of the Year in Hendrik Inno. The Bruins, who fell in the OVC title match last season to Tennessee Tech, lost their only OVC match this year to Jacksonville State.
The Govs have lost the last four matches in the series, including a 6-1 defeat last season in Clarksville. Kiesslich picked up the only point for the Govs with a three-set singles win over current Belmont senior Zak Khan. The Bruins are only 3-6 on the road this season as well.
Inno and partner Marko Ilic have formed a quite an impressive pairing for the Bruins in doubles. The duo is 12-3 this spring in doubles, all coming at the No. 1 spot, winning their past five matches. Ilic is also 4-0 in OVC singles play for the Bruins, as he looks set to face off with Edison at the No. 2 position.
The Govs will also honor three seniors on Saturday: Ozelis, Chad Woodham, and Hunter Sanders. The ceremony for the men and women will be held directly after the conclusion of the men’s match.
