Boulder City, NV – Despite being one of five teams in the tournament to post round-over-round improvements in each successive round, the Austin Peay State University (APSU) men’s golf dropped a couple of spots in the final standings at the Jackrabbit Invitational, which wrapped up Saturday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

The Govs fired a 296 for the final day, wrapping the tournament with a tidy 901 (305-300-296); however, Austin Peay’s plus-eight on the day, while firmly in the upper echelon of final-day performances, paled in comparison to what South Dakota (even-par) and South Dakota State (plus-three) were able to do, and that duo leapfrogged both the Govs and Weber State to move into the top-five.
James Madison won the event as a team by 24 strokes; runner-up Texas State was closer by strokes to ninth-place North Dakota State than they were to the Dukes.
The upper class led the way for the Govs on the final day, and few were more impressive overall than Michael Busse. The junior carded a one-under 71, ninth-best in an 88-person field. He opened with a birdie on the 402-yard, par-4 No. 6, but came in clutch with an eagle on his penultimate hole, the 579-yard par-5 at No. 4, erasing a pair of birdies accrued earlier in the round. Overall, he placed 10th—his second top-10 showing this spring—with a 222 (77-74-71).
Junior Austin Lancaster and sophomore Chase Korte continued their assault on the par-3 holes; the duo finished as the top-two scorers by average on par-3 offerings, and were the only two players to register under-par averages on par-3 holes for the tournament; as a team, the Govs led on par-3 holes by five strokes. Korte led the Govs and tied for the tournament lead with 38 pars, while Lancaster’s eight birdies led the Govs. Korte placed 24th (74-74-76—224), while Lancaster climbed seven spots for a 30th-place finish (75-79-73—227).
Sophomore Garrett Whitfield tied for 56th (79-78-76—233), one of two Govs to improve round-over-round each time out. Freshman Micah Knisley shot a 79 in his final round to close it out for the Govs.
After an aggressive early part to the season, the Govs will have nearly a month off ahead of the Wofford Invitational, April 1st-2nd in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
