Deland, FL – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s tennis team came through with another win, defeating a tough Stetson squad, 4-3, Monday, at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
The Governors (9-0) remained undefeated after what looked to be a close contest if one only saw the scoreline, but the Govs took control of the match early on, led by two wins from Helena Kuppig.

Honoka Nakanishi and Tatiana Lopez won their fifth straight doubles match at No. 2 doubles, but the Hatters (7-4) responded with a victory at No. 1 doubles.
Fabienne Schmidt, who returned after injury in the last match against Kennesaw State, joined Kuppig at No. 3 doubles. The Germans came up with a clutch 7-5 win to take a critical 1-0 lead into singles.
Kuppig continued her fine day in the singles portion, as she took the first set at No. 5 singles. Danielle Morris and Claudia Yanes Garcia also won the first set of their matches, but the Hatters responded by winning the first set at the other three singles matches.
Morris blanked her opponent, 6-0, in the second set of her match at No. 6 singles to extend the Govs lead to 2-0 and Kuppig made it 3-0 shortly after with another straight-set win. Despite Stetson controlling three other singles matches, Yanes Garcia stepped up and delivered the deciding point, winning at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the match.
The doubles point ended up proving the difference as Stetson won the remaining three singles matches to make the final score, 4-3.
The Govs wrap up their road trip with a 2:00pm, Thursday visit to Valdosta State.
