The Govs are coming off their third straight Ohio Valley Conference Tournament appearance under coach David Midlick. The Govs were selected seventh in the OVC Media Poll, with the top eight teams in the conference qualifying for the tournament.
Midlick and his staff will hope that senior Keisha Gregory can continue her fine form from last season. Gregory is the leading returning scorer and also was the team’s overall leading rebounder last year. She also set the school record for free-throw percentage last season and is currently first all-time in the same category for her entire career.
Arielle Gonzalez-Varner is primed for a breakout campaign after coming on strong last season. Gonzalez-Varner was a familiar figure off the bench until the end of the season, where she earned a spot in the starting lineup and made life uncomfortable in the paint for opponents on defense.
Brianah Ferby also highlights the returning crop of Governors, as the sophomore guard will likely take on an expanded role in the offense. Ferby is among the leaders in returning players in points, rebounds, assists, and steals.
The Govs officially open the season next Tuesday with a road game against Cincinnati.
The game is free admission to all fans. Be sure to follow @AustinPeayWBB for all updates, stories, and news about the team.
