Nashville, TN – The champs stay the champs. Austin Peay State University women’s golf team successfully defended its title at the 2018 Town and Country Invitational; what’s more, senior Reagan Greene ensured that the individual title would return to Clarksville by taking the top individual honor.
The victory—which was Austin Peay’s first under head coach Amy McCollum —brought to a close Austin Peay’s fall campaign on the highest possible note.
The Govs followed their school-record 288 from the opening round with a 290, finishing with a 578, holding off Tennessee Tech by two shots. Belmont (594), Lipscomb (596) and Cumberland (606) were the top-five team finishers.
“We’re really proud of how the team battled,” McCollum said. “We broke the program record yesterday, which is always exciting, and then came out again ready to fight today. We played a really solid back-nine and it was fun to see the team working together and keeping one another upbeat.”
Greene followed up her opening-round 69 with a 72 in the final round, giving her a one-shot victory over Tennessee Tech’s Shelby Johnson. She canned a team-high six birdies over 36 holes and dominated the field on par-4 holes, averaging even-par; no other player in the field managed any better than a 4.13 average.
“The fun part about winning this tournament is getting to play with my teammates,” Greene said. “If I got down, they were there to pick me up, which was really cool.”
Freshman Shelby Darnell joined Greene on the all-tournament team, shooting a 144 (72-72) to tie for third. She led the Govs with 26 pars, one off the tournament lead. Fellow newcomer Taylor Dedmen just missed making the all-tournament squad with a 145 (72-73) to tie for sixth; her 2.88 stroke average was second in the entire tournament and marked her third top-10 finish of the fall session.
Another trio of Govs found their way into the top-20, led by senior Taylor Goodley (75-73—148; t-12th); she was joined by individuals Andrea Presilla (73-77—150; t-17th) and Meghann Stamps (76-75—151; t-19th), with senior Ashton Goodley (75-79—154; t-24th) rounding out the day for the Govs.
The Govs return to action in late February for the Oyster Match Play Challenge, hosted by The Citadel in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, February 25th-26th, 2019.
