The Govs need to find a way to replace the production from Falon Baker, Bri Williams, and Brianne Alexander, who were all major contributors last season.
Austin Peay State University does return senior Keisha Gregory, who set the school record for free throw percentage (.945) in a season last year. Gregory is also the leading returning scorer and led the team in rebounds last season.
Arielle Gonzalez-Varner also returns for the Govs. Gonzalez-Varner came on strong near the end of the season and earned herself a bigger role in the team, including starting a number of important matches.
In the OVC Media Poll, the Govs were selected to finish seventh, with the top eight teams making the OVC Tournament at the end of the season. The poll was voted on by various panelists who cover different schools in the OVC.
Defending OVC champion Belmont topped the poll, garnering 11 of 12 first-place votes. UT Martin came in second and Morehead State checked in at third after earning the other first-place vote. SIU Edwardsville, Jacksonville State, Southeast Missouri, Austin Peay, and Murray State rounded out the predicted media OVC Tournament field, with Tennessee Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State, and Eastern Illinois finishing the poll.
The OVC Predicted Order of Finish, as voted on by the league’s head coaches and SID’s, was also released. The Govs were selected ninth in this poll, but the middle of the poll was very close in terms of points. Belmont once again were selected first, coming in with 20 of 24 first-place votes. UT Martin came in second with three first-place votes. Jacksonville State, Morehead State, and Southeast Missouri rounded out the top five, while SIUE finished in sixth and earned the remaining first-place vote. Austin Peay trailed Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State before being picked to finish ahead of Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, and rival Murray State.
The Govs open their season with an exhibition game against Georgetown College (Kentucky), November 2nd.
