Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) women’s soccer team was picked eighth in the annual Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, as announced by the league office.
Defending OVC Regular Season and Tournament Champion Murray State was picked first, collecting 194 points and 15 first-place votes.
Following the Racers was Eastern Kentucky (166, four), Tennessee Tech (151, three) and then Belmont and Southeast Missouri with 138 points each. Rounding out the predicted OVC Tournament field was SIU-Edwardsville (125), UT Martin (98) and the Govs (66). Jacksonville State (64), Morehead State (50) and Eastern Illinois (20) completed the poll.
Austin Peay has qualified for the OVC Tournament five times since the 2010 season, reaching the Championship match twice (2010, 2012).
The Govs return a healthy amount of letterwinners from last season, but have to find a way to replace the production from 2017 first-team All-OVC selection Kirstin Robertson , who led the Govs in goals, shots, and points last season. The Govs do return midfielder Morgan Drawdy , a second-team All-OVC and All-Newcomer team member.
Some of the offensive production left by Robertson will fall on former OVC honoree McKenzie Dixon . Dixon was named first-team All-OVC and to the All-Newcomer team in 2015 and is currently eighth on the program’s career list for goals with 13. Sophomore Claire Larose made a huge impact offensively for the Govs last season, ranking second in shots on goal and third for goals scored.
Austin Peay has already started its season, drawing 1-1 with Western Kentucky in an exhibition last Saturday. The Govs return to action, 7:00pm, Friday, with a road exhibition match against Mississippi Valley. The Govs then wrap up their exhibition slate with another road match against West Alabama, starting at noon, Sunday.
