Several Govs are on the periphery of achieving marks heading into the OVC Championships that would effect seeding and positioning, the kinds of things head coach Doug Molnar knows will make a difference for a young squad next week in Charleston, Illinois.
Nowhere do the Govs stand a better chance at improving their seeding than in the sprints. Sophomores Diamond Battle and Tymeitha Tolbert can bump their standing up with solid showings this weekend; Battle ranks fourth in the 60m dash heading into the meet, while Tolbert sits in ninth, one-hundredth of a second outside the top-eight.
In the 400m, freshman Sabrina Richman and senior Allysha Scott can solidify their place in the league hierarchy going into the final week of indoor competition. Richman sits fifth, while Scott is 11th at 57.88; a mere half-second off her season-best would bump her into the top-eight in the league.
In the field, both Nia Gibbs-Francis and Denia Hill-Tate are excited for a solid high-jump field; Hill-Tate is tied for eighth in the OVC, with Gibbs-Francis currently sitting in 11th and eager to improve upon last season’s finish at the OVC Indoors, which saw her place sixth overall for crucial points toward the Governors fifth-place team finish.
In the pole vault, Ohio native Savannah Amato returns to the Buckeye State hoping to replicate last season’s victory in this event; she’ll be flanked by junior Dascha Hix and freshman Morgan Bradley, who rank second and seventh, respectively, on the OVC lists.
This meet, which features student-athletes from Ohio State, Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio), Northern Kentucky and Ohio University in addition to Austin Peay, is a one-day affair set for a 4:00pm, Friday, February 16th start from French Field House in Columbus.
