        Austin Peay Sports Information

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University track and field team will make it back-to-back weekends in the mid-state area when it treks to Nashville for the Music City Challenge, hosted by Vanderbilt.

The two-day event begins 4:00pm, Friday, February 12th, 2016 with the high jump and weight throw at the Vanderbilt Multipurpose Facility.

This will be Austin Peay’s fourth mid-state meet during the 2015-16 indoor campaign, and its second at Vanderbilt; the Governors opened the season December 5th at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener, with junior Chancis Jones emerging with a third-place, 5.86m (19-2.75) long jump finish in a field that featured six of the nation’s top 100 long jumpers, according to tfrrs.org, entering the weekend.

Unfortunately, lingering injury troubles will keep both Jones and junior Kaylnn Pitts out this weekend.

The Governors will be in action against some of the area’s top competitors this weekend. In addition to the host Commodores, Austin Peay will square off against Ohio Valley Conference foes Belmont, Murray State and Tennessee Tech, as well as high-major schools Georgia Tech, Mississippi State and Texas Tech and regional powers Western Kentucky (10th in the Southeast Region, according to USTFCCCA.org), Middle Tennessee (12th, South), SMU (14th, South Central) and Jacksonville (14th, South).

Five Governors enter competition this weekend seeking to improve upon top-five OVC standing in their respective events, but perhaps none is primed for a breakout like Breigh Jones. The senior from Memphis, who won her first OVC Indoor Championships gold medal last season, has yet to match her top seven performances in the 400m from a year ago, but saw her season-best drop by nearly a second during the Feb. 14 weekend last season at the Spire Invitational. Jones picked up the win in the 400m last week at the MT Invitational.

Senior Kymmalett Ross (third in the 200m, fifth in the 60m) and freshmen Savannah Amato and Dascha Hix (first and second, respectively, in the pole vault) are other Governors with top-five conference rankings.

The Governors final outing before the OVC Indoor Championships will be next weekend at the Buckeye Tune-Up, February 20th in Columbus, Ohio.
