Austin Peay Golf Govs tied for fifth after two rounds of SIUE event

Madison, IL – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team sits in a fifth-place tie after the opening day of the 2015 SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational, Monday, at the Gateway National Golf Links.
With senior Chris Baker (5-under 66) and sophomore Justin Arens (3-under 68) leading the way in the morning—the round’s start delayed by fog, the Govs shot an opening-round 4-under 280 on the par-71, 7,091-yard layout.
However, the Govs could not quite match that performance during the afternoon, shooting a 3-over 287 to sit at 567, leaving them tied with Bradley.

Host SIUE, playing on its home course, were under par in both rounds, shooting 12-under 272 in the morning and 3-under 281 in the afternoon to sit at 553. The Cougars are nine shots clear of second-place Belmont while Missouri State (564) was third and South Dakota (565) fourth. South Dakota got back-to-back 66s from Jordan Rykal, who is the individual leader after the opening two rounds.
Two other Ohio Valley Conference schools, UT Martin and Tennessee Tech are tied for seventh at 570 in the 15-team field. Meanwhile, Murray State (578/11th) and Eastern Illinois (621/15th) round out the remaining OVC scores.
Individually for the Govs, Baker is tied for fifth, shooting 66-71 for a 5-under 137. Arens followed his 68 with a 1-over 72 for a 2-under 140. Junior Erik Hedberg, after a first-round 74, came in with an even-par 71 in the afternoon for a 145. One shot back was senior Austin Kramer who shot 72-74 for 146. Meanwhile, APSU’s third senior overcame an opening-round 78 to be an afternoon counter with a 2-over 73 for a 151 total.
Sophomore Alex Rios, playing as an individual, shot an 83-78 for a 161.
The tourney’s final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.
