Pawleys Island, SC – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team shot 1-under par, Tuesday, in the final round of the Golfweek Program Challenge. But on a day when low scores were the rule at the True Blue Golf Club, the Govs’ 287 was not enough to prevent slipping in the final standings.
With senior Chris Baker and Tyler Phillips each shooting 2-under 70s, the Governors, who entered the day tied for sixth, still were good enough to gain a Top 10 finish in the 18-team tournament. They finished at 4-under par 860 to finish 10th.

Jacksonville led from start to finish and finished 30-under par 834. James Madison came in second after shooting a final-round 20-under par 268 for an 841. Eleven teams played under par Tuesday.
“It obviously wasn’t the finish we wanted but we did many good things this weekend,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “Unfortunately in rounds two and three we couldn’t get enough birdies to fall.”
Phillips played the front nine clean and then birdied 10 before bogeying 12. He finished the round with consecutive birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. Baker had four birdies and one bogey on the front nine, heading to the back nine at 3-under par. But bogeys on Nos. 14 and 16 sandwiched his only birdie on the back nine, leaving the All-Ohio Valley Conference performer at 2-under par.
Fellow senior Austin Kramer, who played the front nine at 2-under, seemed set to finish under par but No. 18 halted that plan as a double-bogey left him at even-par 72.
Sophomore Alex Rios shot a 3-over 75 to finish at even-par 216 (to match Phillips and Kramer) in his first APSU tourney while junior Erik Hedberg shot a 4-over 76.
“Our main goal now is to learn from our mistakes,” Wilson said, “because we have a stiff challenge ahead of us at Inverness (Intercollegiate, September 21st-22nd).”
