Sean Nolin Pitches 3.0 Shutout Innings In First Rehab Start For Nashville Sounds
Des Moines, IA – Despite outhitting Iowa and putting together a strong comeback late, Nashville dropped the third game of the series at Principal Park on Thursday afternoon, 6-4.
The Sounds scored three runs in the ninth inning, their most all season in the final frame, but the deficit proved to be too large. They fell to 10-9 when outhitting an opponent and are now eight games below the .500 mark, their worst mark all season.
Sean Nolin, still on rehab assignment for the Oakland Athletics, was making his first start in a Sounds uniform. The lefty tossed 31 pitches through 3.0 innings, shutting out the Cubs and adding three strikeouts.
Right-hander Chris Bassitt then entered in relief and surrendered a pair of runs in the sixth. Bassitt, who was appearing in his first game since being optioned from Oakland on Tuesday, ended up getting charged with four runs on four hits through 3.0 innings.
Javy Baez was responsible for putting Iowa on top in the sixth. His two-run single scored Rubi Silva and John Andreoli and it extended his hitting streak to five games. The Cubs then busted it open with a four-run seventh frame, capped by a Silva two-run double. Iowa’s lead sat at 6-1, which was more than enough run support for Tsuyoshi Wada.
Wada was facing Nashville for the second time in his last two starts. The left-hander seemed to baffle the Sounds on Thursday, tossing 7.0 innings with four hits, one run and six strikeouts. Wada left with the lead and earned his first win of the season.
Nashville scored first in a game for the 20th time this season. The run in the fourth was produced when Ryan Roberts doubled to left with two outs and Kent Matthes scored from first.
The Sounds were down by five entering the ninth and put together a furious comeback. Andy Parrino, Alden Carrithers, Matt Carson and Luke Carlin all posted singles in the inning, but Nashville concluded the game by leaving the bases loaded. Carrithers tied a team-high 10-game hitting streak with his single (Wendle, April 28-May 8), while Parrino extended his streak to nine games.
Nashville and Iowa conclude their series tomorrow night at Principal Park. Right-hander Arnold Leon (0-2, 4.43) will pitch against lefty Eric Jokisch in the series finale. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08pm.
