        Austin Peay Govs 15-hit outburst not enough in loss to Hilltoppers

        Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team rapped out 15 hits but it wasn’t enough in a 10-6 nonconference loss to Western Kentucky, Wednesday night at Raymond C. Hand Park.

        Austin Peay (22-21) strung together multiple hits just twice in the contest. A three-hit second inning resulted in two runs courtesy shortstop Imani Willis‘ single, tying the game 2-2.

        In the fifth, the Govs had three straight base hits and designated hitter Alex Robles‘ ended the streak with a RBI single to get the Govs within a run, 4-3.

        Western Kentucky (23-20) eased its lead back to 5-3 in the seventh courtesy first baseman Ryan Church’s two-run home run. The Hilltoppers then added four runs in the eighth, extending its lead to 10-4, as the Govs bullpen issued five walks and hit two batters in the frame.

        APSU's Cayce BredlauThe Govs got two runs back in its half of the eighth when left fielder Cayce Bredlau hit a two-run double to set the final score.

        Austin Peay starter Michael Costanzo (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on three hits in three-plus innings. The Govs utilized six pitchers in the contest, Jake Corum and Keirce Kimbel each supplying scoreless innings in relief.

        Robles led the Govs offense with a 3-for-4, two RBI outing which included a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Second baseman Garrett Copeland went 3-for-4 and scored twice, both with Robles swinging the bat.

        APSU's Garrett CopelandWestern Kentucky reliever Brandon Allen (1-0) picked up the win after allowing one run on eight hits in 3.2 innings, striking out four. Hilltoppers starter Logan Weins allowed two runs in 1.1 innings and did not factor into the decision.

        Church finished the night 2-for-2 with three RBI, adding a first-inning sacrifice fly to his home run. The Hilltoppers finished with only seven hits in the contest but took advantage of nine hits and three hit batsmen in the contest.

        Austin Peay returns to action with a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at UT Martin, Friday-Sunday. The series begins with a 6:00pm, Friday contest at Skyhawk Field.
