South Alabama leads the way after firing an opening-round 293, followed by South Dakota State (297).

The three-day, 54-hole event will continue Monday afternoon on the par-72, 6,113-yard layout with the tourney concluding Tuesday morning. Sunday was a day that saw the Lady Govs unable to avoid the big numbers, costing almost all the Lady Govs.
“We played better today (than the season-opening tournament),” APSU coach Sara Robson. “We are not as consistent as we need to be. When we get into difficult situations we have to do a better job of getting ourselves out of them, take the bogey and avoid the big numbers.”
Junior Jessica Cathey was the one Lady Gov to avoid big numbers. Continuing her steady play, the two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection shot a 75, Sunday, a round that included 15 pars and three bogeys. She is tied for 19th overall.
“I know Jessica wants to give herself a chance for some birdies Monday,” Robson said. “Today she didn’t. But she did a great job of getting up-and-down. I think she did that at least nine times.”
Sophomore Morgan Kauffman was the only other Lady Gov to shoot less than 80, coming in at 79 while sophomore Morgan Gardner and freshmen AnnaMichelle Moore and Ana Pope shot 83 and 84, respectively.
“Kauffman had some really tough holes—she had three doubles (bogeys),” Robson said. “She put herself in some tough situations today. If she can avoid those situations she has a really solid round.”
Robson believes the Lady Govs task to improvement, Monday, is relatively simple.
“We have to hit more greens to give us a chance for some birdies,” Robson said. “We also have to do a better of recovery—when we hit a bad shot we need to take the bogey and avoid the double bogey in those situations.”
