Hilton Head, SC – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team got off to a little bit of a sluggish start to open the 2015 Spring season. As a result the Governors sit in 13th place after Day 1 of the 10th Annual Wexford Plantation Intercollege, being played on the 6,828-yard, par-72 Wexford Plantation course.
After firing an opening-round 16-over 304 which left them tied for 11th, the Govs were 10 over in the second round—26-over par overall—as most Govs were through 15 holes.

Weather permitting, the tourney’s second round will be completed Tuesday before the final 18 are played. However, any sort of delays could reduce the tourney to just 36 holes.
“I felt like we came out with a good mindset,” said APSU coach Robbie Wilson in his first tourney as head coach. “But we just didn’t execute early in Round 1. Wexford is a tough venue and it is not a course where you are going to make a bunch of birdies.
“I thought we hung in there but just didn’t make a run to climb the leaderboard.”
Junior Austin Kramer, playing No. 1 as he did in the fall, led the Governors with a 1-over 73. He was 2-over through 15 holes in the second round, leaving him 3-over for the tournament.
Freshman Andres Navarette, who was solid in preseason qualifying, was two-over at 74 and 3-over in round 2. Senior Tucker Wallace was 6-over 78 in Round 1 while junior transfer Tyler Phillips, in his first Govs tournament, was at 79 as was freshman Justin Arens. However, Phillips, at least through the second round’s 15, had shaken off his first-tourney jitters and was just 2-over in the second round.
Wofford (290) held a one shot lead over Charleston Southern after the opening round but had a seven-shot lead overall before dark ended Round 2. South Carolina-Aiken, after shooting 305 in the opening round, soared up the leaderboard with a minus-7 through 15 holes in the second round.
The 19-team tourney also features Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee Tech, which shot an opening round 315 and is plus-40 heading into the final day.
“If we can make a move we can jump up six or seven spots real quick that is how tight things are bunched up,” Wilson said.
