Vikings Fall And Knights Rise In District Tourney Semifinals

Kenwood High SchoolClarksville High School WildcatsClarksville, TN – The top four seeds in the District 10-AAA boys basketball tournament played each other in the semifinals at Kenwood High School Saturday.

Last season’s tournament champion advanced while this season’s top seeded regular season champion came up short.

The Clarksville High Wildcats and the Kenwood Knights advanced to play in the district tournament championship.

Game 1 – Clarksville High 55 Northwest 39

A big quarter by the Wildcats subdued the Vikings, 55-39. Only one point separated the two teams going into the fourth quarter. Then, the Wildcats took over the game with a 17-1 run that had them ahead of the Vikings, 50-33, with two minutes left in the game.

The Vikings settled for jump shots which didn’t find the net early in the fourth quarter. By the end of the game they had shot just 2-of-12 from the field and committed seven turnovers in the quarter.

After hitting the game winner in the first round game, Marice Wright fouled out with no points against the Wildcats. Elijah McCoin led four Viking scorers with 23 points.

McCoin’s last basket was a 3-pointer that ended the Wildcats 17-1 run with less than two minutes left in the game. Avery Bates scored six points in the run including a dunk he threw down at the end of a fast break that put the Wildcats ahead 43-32 with 3:18 left in the game. They outscored the Vikings 24-7 in the final quarter.

Bates was one of four Wildcats to score double-digit points in the game. Cameron Stiff and Tariq Silver both scored 14 points. Bates finished with 12 and J. J. Jones scored 11.

Game 2 – Kenwood 63 Northeast 52

The Knights failed to repeat as the district regular season champions, but they took a step toward repeating as district tournament champions with a 63-52 win over the Northeast Eagles.

The Knights put together a 10-1 run in the last three minutes of the game to get the victory. Before those final minutes, the two teams were neck and neck throughout the game. They were tied 25-25 at halftime and were separated by only one point, 46-45 going into the fourth quarter.

With 2:51 remaining in the game, Matthew Norl made one free throw to give his team a 54-51 lead. It was followed by two points in the paint by Keith Dowlen. Then, the Knights shot 7-of-8 free throws to close out the last 90 seconds of the game.

The Eagles committed six turnovers in the last quarter. They also shot just 1-of -11 from the field and 5-of-9 free throws. They were outscored 17-7 in the fourth.

Dowlen led all scorers with 23 points. Tyree Boykin scored 17 and Angel Hall produced 10 points. D’Andre Cross was the Eagles leading scorer with 20 points. He was one of seven Eagles to score in the game. He and Nick Green were the only double-digit scorers. Green scored 10 points.

The Knights will play the Wildcats in the District 10-AAA Tournament championship game Tuesday, February 17th at Kenwood High School. The Vikings and Eagles will play in the consolation game the same day.
