Clarksville, TN – The District 10-AAA girls basketball tournament continued Saturday at Kenwood High School. Four teams competed with the winners advancing to the Championship game and the losers going to the consolation game.
The Rossview Lady Hawks and the Henry County Lady Patriots secured wins and will face each other in the tournament championship game.
Game 1 – Rossview 51 West Creek 35
After repeating as the district regular season champions and securing the top seed in the district tournament, the Lady Hawks took another step to repeating as the district tournament champions by defeating the West Creek Lady Coyotes, 51-35.
Both teams played solid, physical defense that generated turnovers and made scoring tough, but it was the Lady Hawks who capitalized most with points from turnovers and transition baskets. As always, the Lady Hawks looked to their inside post game for most of their offense. Their post players, Mickey Head and Jemiah Harrison, delivered. They led the team with 10 points each. Harrison scored a double-double with 10 rebounds as well.
Ariana Prather was the Lady Coyotes leading scorer with 10 points. Deja Walls was right behind her with nine. The Lady Coyotes offense struggled early. They made just one field goal in the first quarter. They got behind the Lady Hawks and turnovers hampered their ability to make up any ground.
Leading 19-14 going into the third quarter, the Lady Hawks finished the game strong by scoring 16 points in both the third and fourth quarters. They shot 69 percent (11-of-16) from the field in the second half. They out-rebounded the Lady Coyotes 18-8 in the second half as well.
Aggressive defense by both sides had each team on the foul line often. The two teams combined for 44 free throw attempts, including 29 attempts in the second half. Shooting just 2-of-9 from the field in the fourth quarter, it was the 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line that kept the Lady Coyotes in the game. But it wasn’t enough to get them the win.
Game 2 – Henry County 62 Clarksville High 56
The Clarksville High Lady Wildcats rallied from nine points down to force overtime, but still came up short against the Lady Patriots, 56-62.
In overtime, the game became a battle of attrition and free throws. Key players on both sides fouled out and both teams made only one shot from the field. However, the Lady Wildcats committed five turnovers and sent the Lady Patriots to free throw line where they made 11-of-12 attempts.
Lady Wildcat sophomore guard Aliyah Miller made a free throw to tie the game at 56 with 40 seconds left in overtime. Afterwards, the Lady Wildcats got to the free throw line one more time and failed to score. Conversely, the Lady Patriots got to the foul line three more times and made all six attempts.
Treanton led all scorers with 21 points. Three Lady Patriots scored double-digit points. Gracie Osbron led the team with 16 points. Celie Hudson scored a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Emily Gilstrap added 10 points.
The Lady Patriots victory advances them to the championship game against the Lady Hawks. The Lady Wildcats will play the Lady Coyotes in a consolation game to determine third and fourth place. Both games are scheduled to be played at Kenwood High School Monday, February 16th.
