Clarksville, TN – The last week of the local high school basketball regular season is here. Only two district games remain before the district tournament, which means only two chances left to grab the regular season championship and the number one seed.
After last weeks games, there is a new team sitting at the top. However, the hold of the top spot is tenuous at best with five teams still within two games of each other.
The Northwest Vikings finished last season 6-20 with only three district wins. Now, they are 15-9 on a three game win streak with the most wins in District 10-AAA. The Vikings historic season continued last week with impressive wins over the Clarksville High Wildcats and last season’s champion Kenwood Knights.
The win over the Knights last week splits their two games this season and puts them ahead by one game. The Vikings will finish the season against a descending Henry County Patriots and a surging Springfield Yellow Jackets.
Week 11 Recap
The Yellow Jackets (14-11) are peaking at the right time. They have won three of their last four games including two district wins last week against the Patriots and the Northeast Eagles. Last week’s wins put the Yellow Jackets in a three way tie with the Wildcats and Eagles, only two games behind the Vikings. They will have pivotal games against the Wildcats and Vikings this week.
The Knights (15-8) three game win streak came to an end last Friday with a loss to the Vikings, 55-66. The loss opened the door for the Vikings to go into the last week at the top of the district. The Knights will need to win both their games this week against the Rossview Hawks and the Eagles for any hope of repeating as regular season champions.
The Eagles (10-12) also had a three game winning streak come to an end last Friday. They were defeated by the Yellow Jackets, 57-64, in overtime. Now, they are tied with the Yellow Jackets and Wildcats in district play. After playing the struggling West Creek Coyotes Tuesday, February 3rd, the Eagles could be playing for the regular season championship against the Knights Friday, February 6th.
The Wildcats (10-11) ended a three game losing streak by beating the Coyotes 73-48 last Friday. Tied with the Eagles and the Yellow Jackets in district play, they will need to win their games against the Yellow Jackets and Patriots this week for any shot at the regular season championship. They have already defeated both teams once this season.
The Hawks (12-9) split games last week, following a loss to the Eagles last Tuesday with a win over the Patriots Friday. It was just their fourth district win this season. This Tuesday, they will play the Knights whom they defeated in a close game, 51-50, last month. Then, they will finish district play against the Coyotes Friday.
The Coyotes (4-21) and the Clarksville Academy Cougars (5-16, 2-9) extended their losing streaks with two more district losses last week. The Coyotes still have only one district win this season. The Cougars have won two district games. The Cougars lost a rematch against the Montgomery Central Indians last Thursday, 49-64.
The Indians (15-8, 9-5) own three of their four games last week including a district win over Fairview, 54-34. They are currently third in District 11-AA behind Waverly Central and Creek Wood. The Indians will play Waverly Central for the second time Tuesday, February 3rd.
