Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University will probably see the final chapters of its Fall sports exploits written this week, with the Governors football team closing out its schedule at home versus Tennessee Tech and the Lady Govs volleyball team playing in the postseason.
The volleyball team heads into the Ohio Valley Conference tournament as the seventh-overall seed with a record of 14-18 overall and 8-8 in the OVC.
Austin Peay Lady Govs Volleyball and Governors Football wrap up their seasons this week.
They were the only team in an OVC sport that has to qualify for the post season that earned a spot in the post season.
The Lady Govs open up OVC tournament play on November 20th versus Belmont, with the championship match set for November 22nd.
Along the way, the Lady Govs had several in-season honors with senior Jada Stotts being named OVC Offensive Player of the Week twice and junior setter Aubrey Marsellis earning OVC Setter of the Week honors twice.
Marsellis was also named to all-tournament teams twice in the regular season, the first at the Akron Invitational and at the DISH Lady Vol Classic – where Stotts all earned an all-tournament selection.
Marsellis also recorded two of the six triple-doubles authored by OVC volleyball player this season, turning the trick versus Western Kentucky and SIUE.
Off the court, senior Liz Landon became the first Lady Govs volleyball players since 1992 to be named to the Capital One Academic All-District® First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The Governors football team heading into its finale versus Tennessee Tech, 1-10 overall and 1-6 in OVC play.
Even though they have won only one game this season, the 20-13 win versus OVC foe Murray State ended the longest losing streak in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level at 18 games.
Other highlights for the football program were the opening of the new Governors Stadium on September 13th, when it hosted Chattanooga, while both quarterback Mickey Macius and running back Otis Gerron being named Tennessee Sports Writers Association Offense Player of the Week during the season.
Macius was also the only Governors to earn an in-Season OVC honor, being named Newcomer of the Week following the Murray State victory.
In other fall sports that have already finished their seasons:
Men’s Cross Country
The team finished ninth in the OVC Championship Meet, but did win an in-season meet by taking first place at the JSU Foothills Invitational – the first meet win for the Govs since the Thorobreds Stampede on October 8th, 2011.
Sophomore Daniel Hamm also took the individual title at JSU Foothills Invitational.
The squad was consisted of eight sophomores one freshman.
Women’s Cross Country
The Lady Govs finished eighth in the OVC Championship Meet, but did have six of their eight runner post personal bests in the event.
They posted two second-place finished during the regular season, and much like the men’s team are very young with only one senior on the squad to go with one junior and two sophomores and freshmen
The Lady Govs finished the season with an overall record of 4-13-1 and 3-6-1 in OVC play, finishing eighth overall in the standings – missing out of the OVC postseason tournament for the first time since 2011.
Offense was the biggest hurdle for the Lady Govs, finishing with 17 goals in 17 matches – the second lowest goal total in the OVC this season.
Still, sophomore Gina Fabbro was named to the All-OVC Second-Team, finishing fourth in the conference in points, while senior Claire Pultz and junior Nikki Filippone earned OVC in-season honors – with Pultz being named Defensive Player of the Week (September 26th) and Filippone Goalkeeper of the Week (October 14th).
