Simpsonville, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team gained some valuable experience this week as it finished fourth in the Cardinal Intercollegiate, completed Tuesday at the University of Louisville Club.
“We beat a lot of good teams this week,” APSU interim coach Dustin Korte said. “I would be lying if I said I was overjoyed with the way we finished. But we hit a lot of good shots this week and we took a lot from this tournament.

“When you think about it we took this young team, with three freshmen, were put in the situation we were in (playing in the final group). I don’t think they realized how difficult that is. What they learned today is not something they can learn on the practice tee. They are on their way.”
The Governors shot their worst tourney score (297) on the final to finish at 879. Host Louisville rallied to win the tourney with a 870, followed by Louisiana-Monroe and Cincinnati (877). The Govs bested UT Martin (882/5th), Eastern Kentucky (885/6th) and Murray State (11th/904).
Junior Chris Baker, who bounced back from an opening-round 79, shot 1-under 71 for a 223, to finish t/26th. Freshman Colton Godwin, recovering from Monday’s second-round 79, shot a 1-0ver 73, finishing at 224.
Another freshman, Jonas Vaisanen, struggled late to finish with a 76 for a 222 while Austin Kramer, who was in third entering the final round, fired a final-round 77 for a 218, tying him for 10th overall.
“It all is just a learning experience for them,” Korte said. “They kept good attitudes all day, despite some struggles. We had too many hiccups today–we had some more doubles and triples. We have to learn after 10 or 12 goods to take a par or a bogey after a bad shot.
“But like I said they are learning and they are going to continue to learn this fall.”
