Clarksville, TN – Despite not getting their first birdie until the fifth hole, June 22nd at Swan Lake Golf Course, the duo of Tyler Guy and Hunter Richardson went wire-to-wire to claim the tournament championship in the 2014 Bud Light Two-Man Scramble.
Guy and Richardson, who will be collegiate teammates at the University of Tennessee at Martin this coming fall, held a three shot lead heading into the final 18 holes, but saw that lead dwindle over the first nine holes of play.
“A slow start is an understatement,” Guy said. “But our group as a whole couldn’t get anything going on the front side. Both teams made their first birdie on number five, then they caught fire in the middle of the round and then we birdied the last three holes to make the turn at four under.

“It was frustrating, but we finally caught fire on the back and got it going for a few holes and luckily it was enough.”
The pair would finish the tournament at 24-under par 118 (57-61), two shots better than runner-ups Lance Elkins and Rob Crump (61-59=120/22-under par).
Greg Guinn and Todd Greene (60-61=121) took third place.
“We told ourselves we needed to shoot 11 or 12 under, which would probably be good enough (to win),” Richardson said. “But we started of slowly and really didn’t get going until about the 11th hole, where we starting playing a little bit more like we did yesterday.
“Then we kind of slowed down again around (holes) 15 and 16 and after that we were just trying to keep it (the scoring) around 10 under. We didn’t get 12 under, but we did get enough to win.”
In the senior championship flight, the team of Brad VanKirk and Mike Bell fired their second straight round in the 50’s to post a two-day total of 25-under par 117 (59-58), three shots better than Steve Blackwell and Mike Welker.
The team of Mike Taylor and Jimmy Mashburn (61-60=121) came in third. “It always helps when you have a great partner and Brad is one of the best golfers in Clarksville, if not the best golfer in town,” Bell said. “I helped him a little bit here and there and he picked me up then I needed it.
“If I hit a reasonable shot, then he’s freed up to fire at it and that’s how we did it.”
In the other open division flights:
Tyler Phillips and Bubba Williams (62-59=121) won the first fight be three shots over Colin Welker and Joey Bradley (62-62=124), with Tim Sensing and Drue Sensing (62-63=125) taking third.
In the open second flight, Bill Sites and Jim Cherry turned in the low round of Day 2 in any open flight with a round of 58 to go with their first day 65 to post a total of 123, three shots in front of Marcus and Wesley Sartain (64-62=126), with Richie and Hunter Rye (65-64=129) taking third place.
In the open third flight, Rick Richardson and Tom Bradley (66-62=128) took top honors, with Dustin Smith and Matt Scalifani (67-63=130) taking second.
