Vanderbilt falls to Texas 4-0 at College World Series
Omaha, Neb –Texas used four early runs and stellar pitching to top Vanderbilt 4-0 and force the Commodores into an elimination game.
Vanderbilt (48-20) starter Tyler Ferguson struggled with command from the first pitch, hitting Texas (46-20) leadoff hitter Brooks Marlow with his first pitch of the game.
Ferguson followed up with a walk and a hit by pitch to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, the Dores looked to have an opportunity to get out of the inning with a double play ball but C.J. Hinojosa’s ground ball hit second base umpire Mark Uyl for a single that scored the first run of the game.
Ferguson struck out the next batter but issued another walk to force in the second run that ended his afternoon. Brian Miller entered and struck out Kacy Clemens to the first.
The Longhorns added two more runs in the second aided by two triples.
The Vandy offense struggled to get on track all day getting shutout for the third time this season. The Commodores put runners on the bases in six of the nine innings but failed to advance a runner past second base. John Norwood and Tyler Campbell combined for four of the Dores’ six hits.
Texas starter Nate Thornhill was outstanding with eight scoreless innings to earn the win. The right-hander scattered six hits and struck out five.
