Knoxville, Tn – Three icons in Tennessee women’s basketball history were among those honored Saturday, as the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame recognized the accomplishments of the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team during its 2014 induction weekend.
Pat (Head) Summitt, Patricia Roberts and Cindy Brogdon were saluted for their contributions to that squad and will permanently be featured at the hall in a display entitled “Trailblazers of the Game.” The 1976 team will join the All American Red Heads, Edmonton Grads, the Former Helms/Citizens Savings/Founders Bank, and the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens as the only five groups recognized as “Trailblazers of the Game.”
Summitt, who at the time was in the early years of coaching the Lady Vols and still going by her maiden name, Pat Head, made the U.S. team and helped the unheralded squad earn a surprise silver medal as women’s basketball made its Olympic debut. She was accompanied by (then) future Lady Vols Roberts and Brogdon, who would soon shift roles from teammates to pupils.

Roberts joined the team at Tennessee and played one season (1976-77) after transferring from Emporia State (Kansas). Brogdon, meanwhile, came to Rocky Top from Mercer. She was a Lady Vol from 1977-79. Roberts earned WBCA All-America honors in 1977, while Brogdon did so in 1978 and 1979 after previously garnering accolades at MU in 1976.
All three 1976 Olympians are enshrined individually in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, as is current Tennessee head coach Holly Warlick and six others affiliated with the UT program through the years.
