Tyler Phillips leads wire-to-wire to win 2014 Wendy’s Invitational

[1]Clarksville, TN – Tyler Phillips parlayed a four-under par opening round into a four-stroke victory, May 18th at Swan Lake Golf Course, as the Trevecca Nazarene University rising junior on the Trojans golf team won the 2014 Wendy’s Invitational, the opening event on the Clarksville Golf Association’s calendar.

Phillips finished the two-day event with a two-under 140 total (67-73), four shots better than runner-up Payton Williams (73-71=144).

“Winning today is a real confidence builder,” Phillips said. “I haven’t won a tournament in a couple of years and it’s always nice to win one again.

“Hopefully I can keep this momentum, because I have some big tournaments over the next month, month-and-a-half, and I hope this gets me off into the right direction.”

But Phillips did admit he was a little nervous heading into the final 18 holes.

“I was a little nervous because I haven’t been in that position in a long time,” he said. “I knew there were a lot of good players in the field, so I knew I was going to have to play it safe and play smart and eliminate mistakes. I managed to do that for most of the day.”

Steve Riegle (70-75=145) finished third, beating Brian Balthrop (72-73=145) in a scorecard playoff, with Mark Hayes rounding out the top five.

In the open division first flight, Colin Welker (76-70=146) — who is a teammate of Phillips and is a rising sophomore at Trevecca on the golf team – finished four shots clear of David Saldana (78-72=150), while Chip Turner (77-75=152) took third.

Rounding out the top five were, Bobby Yingling (77-76) and Todd Greene (77-76), who both finished with 153 totals, with Yingling taking the fourth slot on a scorecard playoff.

In the open division second flight, Lance Elkins (81-75=156) edged J.T. Ferrell (81-76=157) by a shot to take the top spot, with Eric Bradley coming in third (82-76=158).

Three golfers finished with 160 totals for their two rounds, with Christian Moore (80-80=160) and Tyler Britt (80-80=160) finished fourth and fifth respectively after scorecard playoffs, while Tm Bradley (82-78=160) just missed out and took sixth place.

In the Wendy’s Invitational senior divisions, Brad Van Kirk (70-70=140) picked off where he left off in 2013, winning the senior championship flight by a stroke over Steve Blackwell (70-71=141).

“I broke the seal the first win I ever had an individual tournament at Swan Lake last year in the Tournament of Champions,” Van Kirk said. “So now it’s not in between my ears anymore. It’s a great start to the season and I’m real happy with it.”

Van Kirk also added he had a couple of things go his way this week that helped put him over the top.

“The one club in the bag that usually lets me down is what won the tournament for me this weekend and that the putter,” he said. “Also a key to the tournament was when I hit it out of bounds on number 14 and made par. I was out of bounds by three feet and I still made par that was the tournament.”

Joe Hodge (72-71=143) was three shots back to finish in third place, with Mike Welker (72-73=145) and Jeff Whitlow (73-72=145) taking fourth and fifth, after a scorecard playoff.

In the first flight in the senior division, Bruce Walker was five shots better than everyone else in the flight to rally and take the top spot with a 153 total (80-73), with Richard Ashbrook (77-78=155) taking second place.

Pat Manning (77-82=159) finished third in the second flight, while Billy Gray (81-80=161) and Mike Gullett (80-81=161) took the fourth and fifth after a scorecard playoff.

The next event on the CGA schedule is the Commanding General’s Golf Tournament, on June 14-15 at Cole Park Golf Course.
