West Creek baseball scores four in the seventh to rally past Northwest 6-5
The pick-off play came right after West Creek (13-13, 4-7 District 10-AAA) had a runner tagged out on a missed suicide-squeeze attempt for the second out of the seventh inning. “I’ve told our boys all year that we have to fight and out scrap everybody, no matter who they are playing,” West Creek coach Will Jobe said. “After we got the home run from Jose Poindexter it kind on energized our whole dugout and we were able to put together good at bats after him and got lucky on that situation with that pickle (run down).”Poindexter’s home run cut Northwest’s lead to 5-4, as he also drove in Daniel Otero – who opened the top of the seventh inning with a single. Brennan Metcalf would be brought in to relieve Vikings starter Christian Dorthalina, but he would walk Peyton Burks – who then moved to second base on a passed ball and third base on a groundball out. That brought up Brenden Williams, who singled in Burks with tying run – the first tie score since the game was deadlocked 1-1 in the top of the third inning. After Williams moved into scoring position by stealing second base, the Coyotes caught their first big break of the inning with Carroll striking out – but reaching first base – on a wild pitch. Carroll would move around the bases without the benefit of a hit by stealing second, going to third on the failed suicide squeeze and then score on the failed pickoff. Northwest wouldn’t go down without a fight in the bottom of the seventh, but a tremendous defense play by Coyotes pitcher all but sealed the victory for West Creek. Marcus Picquet drew a walk to open the inning for the Vikings and move to second base on a slow chopper to third by Harlow Dixon. Zach Dixon would then hit a high hopper back up the middle that looked like it could be the game-tying base hit, but Poindexter was able to leap up an snag the ball, then turn and fire the ball to third base and cut down Picquet for the second out of the inning. Northwest had opened the game by going up 1-0, in the bottom of the second inning, aided by three Coyotes’ errors. West Creek tied the game 1-1 in the third inning on a double by Poindexter, with Northwest retaking the lead in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Harlow Dixon and Price. The Coyotes would cut the Northwest lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth when Chris Huff was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Northwest would respond with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Metcalf driving in the first run with a single and later scoring himself on a wild pitch. The two teams will play the second game of their District 10-AAA series April 22d at West Creek baseball field, starting at 6:30pm. Photo Gallery
