Austin Peay Lady Govs LogoOxford, Miss –  Sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha recorded her season’s first double-double but it wasn’t enough as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team dropped a 99-69 decision to Mississippi, Monday afternoon, at Tad Smith Coliseum.

Austin Peay (3-10) found the mark early, making six of its first 10 shots and grabbing a 13-10 lead after freshman Tearra Banks’ layup at the 16:30 mark. The Lady Govs pushed its lead to seven points,  23-16, four minutes later thanks to a 9-0 run fueled entirely by Nwokocha (four points) and sophomore Tiasha Gray (five points).

Mississippi (9-5) erased that deficit with an 11-4 run over the next three minutes, tying the game at 27-27. Austin Peay would stand its ground for the next three minutes, with the teams tied at 33-33 with 6:45 left.

However, the Rebels scored the next nine points to start a 17-5 run that pushed its lead to 12 points, 50-38, with 59 seconds left. Gray would hit a jumper on Austin Peay’s final possession to trim the lead to 10 points, 50-40, at halftime.

The Lady Govs scored four of the first six points to open the second half and trimmed the deficit to eight points, 52-44, less than two minutes into the frame. Mississippi responded with a 10-1 run over the next 2:43 – extending its lead to 17 points, 62-45 – as Austin Peay went without a field goal during that span.

Minutes later Mississippi pushed the lead to 20 points and would not be threatened again. In the final minutes, junior Kristen Stainback scored six consecutive points and freshman Tearra Banks ended the game with APSU’s final  five points to set the final score.

Nwokocha led Austin Peay with a 14-point, 10-rebound performance – the third consecutive game an APSU player recorded a double-double. Gray chipped in an 18-point, six assist performance. Banks added 14 points while Stainback finished with 15.

Valencia McFarland led Mississippi with a 22-point, nine-assist outing, including 20 first-half points. Diara Moore added 20 points while Bretta Hart added a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double effort.

Austin Peay returns home to start Ohio Valley Conference play with a 5:15pm, Saturday contest against Southeast Missouri.
