Nashville, TN – The Vanderbilt Commodores managed to send their seniors out on a winning note when Carey Spear kicked a 38 yard field goal with 39 seconds left in the game to defeat Wake Forest 23-21.
The Commodores were not expected to have this much trouble with their ACC opponent, but after their emotional win over in-state rival Tennessee last week, a let down was a real possibility.
Vanderbilt has now posted consecutive eight-win seasons for the first time since 1927-28. Their only concern is that their sluggish finish to the season might influence which post-season bowl game they’ll be offered.
Commodore head coach James Franklin said after the game, “We are not bowl snobs. Wherever they tell us to go, we will be happy to go there.”
It was Senior Day at Vanderbilt, as fans and supporters saluted 20 seniors on the Commodore football team.
Jordan Mathews set another SEC record as the league’s first receiver to top 100 catches. His biggest reception of the day came on the winning drive as it was fourth-and-11 when he caught a 25-yarder from Austyn Carta-Samuels with two defenders all over him.
Franklin alternated quarterbacks throughout the day between Patton Robinette and Carta-Samuels.
Wake Forest had little trouble moving the ball against Vanderbilt, but fell to 4-8 on the season.
Vanderbilt outgained Wake Forest 403-266 in total offense.
