Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University first-year head coach Kirby Cannon got to see his Governors football team practice in full pads for the first time Aug. 10th, despite a delay in the morning due to lighting.
But the severe weather turned into sunshine, with high humidity and temperatures approaching the upper 80s in the afternoon, as the Govs practices for just over two hours in Governors Stadium.
“Today turned out to be perfect weather,” Cannon said. “As a coach, you worry that you’ll go through all of your two-a-days (practices) and not have a day as the day you open up and play your first game. That can be a real problem.
“We took the precautions you have to with heat, but the players are fortunate that they are getting a chance early in camp to get a few days like this. They will get used to it and get acclimated to it and use it as an ally latter on.”
The Govs would work on position fundamentals for the first hour of practice, before seeing the offensive and defensive lines battled against each other at one end of the field, while wide receivers and defensive backs got in work at the other end of the field.
“I know we’re getting better at some positions and we have three or four freshmen that may help us,” Cannon said. “The transfer group is legit and once those guys learn our system they will pop their heads into that first group.”
The Govs would close out the practice part of their day with a scrimmage of 20 or so plays – with a highlight play by Buddy Mitchell, who returning an interception for touchdown for the Governors defense.
“Right now we’re really having the coaches work on effort out there more than anything else,” Cannon said. “We are going to make some mistakes early on in practice in tactics and assignments as we learn them, but we shouldn’t tolerate any slowdown in effort.”
The Governors will have media day on Aug. 11th, before returning for a two-a-day practice Monday Aug. 12th, beginning at 9:00a.m.
Austin Peay is scheduled to have its first full inter-squad scrimmage Aug. 17th at Governors Stadium.
The Govs open their season 5:00p.m. (CT), Aug. 31st at the University of Tennessee.
