Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team has been selected fifth in a preseason poll of Ohio Valley Conference coaches. That was announced Wednesday by the conference office.
The Lady Govs finished with 46 points. Morehead State, who won the 2011 OVC Championship and was second a year ago, led the voting, picking up eight of the 10 first-place votes and 80 total points in being picked as the preseason favorite.
Defending champion Jacksonville State picked up the other two first-place votes and earned 72 total points to be tabbed second. Murray State was third (67), followed by Belmont (52) and the Lady Govs.
The Lady Govs are projected to finish in the same position as they did a year ago. A trio of “Senior Bees”-Tabitha Beard, Lauren Bond and Holly Batey– are expected to lead the Lady Govs, with juniors Rachel Deaton, bouncing back from health issues, and Tala Mumford also expected to challenge along with sophomore Meghan Mueller and freshman Jessica Cathey. In fact, Cathey played the Lady Govs’ best golf over the final two fall tourneys..
For the fourth year in a row the OVC Men’s and Women’s Championships will be held at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The women’s championship will be held on April 21-23 while the men’s championship is set for April 25th-27th. This year marks the first with Belmont as a member of the OVC and first that SIUE is postseason eligible.
The Lady Govs will open Spring play, March 4th-5th, when they play in the Racer Classic at Miller Memorial Golf Club in Murray, KY.
