APSU’s Breigh Jones named OVC Track Athlete of the Week
Jones placed third in the 400m dash at the Buckeye Tune-Up with a 56.63 mark, which was converted to 55.89 due to the track size at French Field House. That time moved her into the OVC lead in the event heading into this weekend’s conference championships in Charleston, IL. She leads the conference by 0.25 seconds over Jacksonville State’s Shamira Barrett. In just her first season as a Lady Gov, Jones is already on the verge of becoming listed among Austin Peay track greats. Her mark is just four-hundredths of a second behind Chiamaka Obi’s 2010 school record. Jones also did her part on the Lady Govs 4x400m relay team that earned the victory in Columbus, running the opening leg of what would eventually become a 3:51.79 run. Converted for track size, that 3:48.76 mark is third-best in the OVC this season. This is Jones’ first career weekly honor, and she joins junior Xiamar Richards (February 5th) and senior Chantelle Grey (January 15th) as weekly winners during indoor season.
