APSU vs David Libscomb (77 of 96)

Austin Peay will participate in the Dr. Pepper Classic at Chattanooga against Utah Valley University by opening the classic today at 3:30 p.m. Utah Valley is opening the tournament for the second straight season.

Chattanooga enters the 23rd Dr. Pepper Classic at 3-8 and High Point is 4-6. Those two teams will square off on Friday at 6 p.m.

The Govs (4-8) will then face either host Chattanooga or High Point in the title game Saturday at 6 p.m. The losers play at 3:30 p.m. The Wolverines come in at 6-8 overall after a 73-67 loss to North Carolina Central last Saturday.

Austin Peay lost in the 2000 championship game to host Chattanooga 77-62. The Mocs beat Utah Valley in last season’s championship game 74-59.

The Govs lost their fourth straight after losing to Illinois State  83-57 last Saturday.

Illinois State broke open a tie game with a half-ending 14-2 run as turnovers again proved to be a Govs problem They committed 25, six coming in the final 6:35 of the first half as ISU broke open a 26-26 game. It was the fifth time this season APSU had 20 or more turnovers.

Anthony Campbell, who was named athlete of the week, scored 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting (5 of 9 three-point field goals) and Jeremy Purvis, in just his second game, and freshman forward Preston Herring added eight points.

UVU split a pair of games last week, defeating Troy, 67-64, in overtime before falling short in a late comeback against North Carolina Central, 73-67.

Nick Thompson scored 19 points and Alfonzo Hubbard matched career-highs as a Wolverine with 19 points and nine rebounds in the loss to NCCU. Thompson had his third double-double of the year with 13 points and 12 rebounds against Troy to average 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds on the week to earn himself a share of the Great West Conference Player of the Week award.

Four Wolverines are averaging in double figures, led by 6-9 forward Ben Aird, who is averaging 12.6 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Holton Hunsaker, the son of the coach, is at 11.1 ppg, while  Hubbard (10.9 ppg) and Thompson (10.5 ppg) also are double-digit performers.
