Kentucky’s Alex Poythress, a 6-foot-7, 239-pound freshman forward from Clarksville, Tenn., who graduated from Northeast High, was named SEC?Freshman of the Week after averaging 21.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against 9th-ranked Duke and to Lafayette. Poythress had 20 points and added a team-high eight rebounds in a loss to No. 9 Duke. He then topped that performance with a 9-10 night from the field for a career-high 22 points. He became the first freshman since Brandon Knight in Feb. 2011 to have consecutive 20-point efforts.

Alabama’s Trevor Releford, a 6-foot, 195-pound sophomore guard from Kansas City, Mo., was named SEC?Player of the Week after scoring averaging 18.0 points, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals in leading the Crimson Tide to the 2K?Sports Classic championship with wins over Oregon State and Villanova. Releford was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the event. In the semifinals against Oregon State, he connected on 6-of-10 field goals and recorded 14 points and five assists without a turnover, to lift the Crimson Tide to a 65-62 victory. In the championship game against Villanova, Releford, making his first start of the season, went for a career-high 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor and an impressive 5-of-5 from three-point range in the 77-55 victory over the Wildcats.
