Austin Peay faces DePaul in Chicago today at 1 p.m. in the Govs’ second game in the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge.
The Govs (1-1) lost to Western Kentucky in Bowling Green 75-54 on Tuesday in their first game of the TCCC.
Austin Peay will then travel to Cancun for games against Western Carolina on Tuesday and Howard/Gardner-Webb on the final day Wednesday.
This is the first time Austin Peay has played DePaul, although the Governors were a part of a DePaul-hosted tournament, the Old Style Classic, in 1988.
This is the first time APSU has played a Big East school since the Governors faced Louisville in the 2008-09 season.
DePaul opened the season with a 91-59 win over UC Riverside at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Nov. 9 before the loss to Gardner-Webb on Thursday at Allstate Arena. Austin Peay stands at 1-1 following and opened the season with a 75-64 win over Samford before the loss at Western Kentucky. DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season at DePaul and his 25th as a head coach at the collegiate level.
Following the Austin Peay game, DePaul travels to the Moon Palace Resort for a Tuesday evening game against Wichita State. The Blue Demons and Shockers play at 6 p.m. and the game can be seen on the CBS Sports Network. Zaidman and Blanzy will also call the game online at www.depaulbluedemons.com.
DePaul, picked 13th in the Big East preseason poll, is 1,385-881 (.612) all-time.
The Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 581 straight games, with its last game without a three pointer, Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB.
DePaul head coach Oliver Purnell is in his third season and his 25th season overall. Known as an architect of rebuilding programs, Purnell has led three different schools (Old Dominion, Dayton and Clemson) to NCAA Tournament play while turning around programs at each stop of his career.
Entering 2012-13, DePaul returned nine players including four that started at least 15 games a year ago. Headlining the returners are juniors Cleveland Melvin and Brandon Young. Melvin, a 6-8 forward, was the Big East’s leading returning scorer while Jones averaged 14.5 ppg and had 147 assists a year ago.
What You Should Know… THE SERIES:
This is the first meeting first meeting between Austin Peay, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, and DePaul, a member of the Big East.
WHAT A WIN WOULD MEAN:
The Govs would take a 2-1 mark into Tuesday’s game in Cancun against Gardner-Webb as part of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge…they would go to 2-1…head coach Dave Loos would improve to 1-0 against DePaul…Loos would improve to 1-1 against Oliver Purnell…it would be only APSU’s. third win against current Big East Conference members…it would be APSU’s first win against a Big East member since the Governors defeated Marquette, 82-72, during the 1988-89 season.
WHAT A LOSS WOULD MEAN:
The Govs would fall below the .500 mark for the first time this season…it would be their second straight loss…they would go to 0-1 all-time against DePaul…they would fall to 0-2 in the Cancun Challenge…they would slip to 2-21 all-time against Big East foes…it would be Dave Loos’ 311th APSU loss and 364th all-time.
