Govs face WKU in first leg of Triple Crown Cancun Challenge hoops tourney

Tuesday’s game against Western Kentucky and Saturday’s game at DePaul represent the Governors first two games in the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge.

This is the first time Austin Peay has played Western Kentucky, it’s former Ohio Valley Conference rival, since the 2005-06 season.

The Governors have lost five straight in the series. APSU’s last win came as part of the Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic in the 1999-00 season.

APSU owns a 14-37 all-time record against Western Kentucky and coach Dave Loos is 2-6 all-time against WKU.

Austin Peay was picked to finish third behind Murray State and Southeast Missouri in the newly formed OVC West Division in the preseason poll.

Ray Harper took over as head coach at WKU (0-1) midway through the 2011-12 season and guided the Hilltoppers to an 11-8 record, a Sun Belt Conference tourney title and an NCAA tourney berth.

In the Sun Belt preseason poll, Western Kentucky was picked to finish third in the East Division behind Middle Tennessee and South Alabama.

Western Kentucky sophomore forward George Fant (10.4 ppg/2011-12) and sophomore guard T.J. Price (9.0 ppg/ 2011-12) were named to the Sun Belt
preseason second and third teams, respectively.
