        Reeves-Maybin, Jones lead Northeast over Centennial in Class 5A playoffs

        Northeast won a barn burner over Centennial 49-34 Friday night at the Eagles Nest and will move onto the Class 5A quarterfinals.

        The Eagles (9-3) will travel to take on Beech next Friday night in Hendersonville at 7 p.m. Beech beat Hillsboro 35-6 in its playoff game. Centennial ends its season at 7-5.

        Northeast and Tennessee signee Jalen Reeves-Maybin had another stellar game running for four touchdowns and passing for another one. He rushed for 327 yards on 15 attempts

        Jerome Jones added two more, including the Eagles’ first two, the latter put Northeast up 14-10 in the second quarter. Jones added 198 rushing yards on 21 carries.

        Aarin Buchanin also went 6-for-6 in extra point attempts for the Eagles.

        Centennial’s JJ Tomlin threw four touchdown passes, three to Baily Wisniowski. The final toss made it the final score.

        Those came after Reeves-Maybin tossed a 21-yard pass to Zack Walker and his own 34 yard run thant put the Eagles up 49-27.

        Reeves-Maybin also scored on runs of 94, 40 and 87 yards.

        The 94-yard run put Northeast up 21-10 in the second quarter.

        But Centennial’s Tomlin hit two touchdown passes of 34 and 6 yards to Wisniowski and Deon Sanders that gave the Cougars a 24-21 halftime lead.

          James D. Horne began his writing career at the Carrollton Missouri Democrat in 1995, and was the assistant sports editor/writer for the Hammond Louisiana Daily Star for two years. In 1998, Horne became the Missouri Basketball beat writer for the Columbia Daily Tribune.
