CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Austin Peay State University’s men’s basketball team jumped out to an early 14-4 lead over Samford and never looked back  on its way to a 75-64 victory Friday night in its 2012-13 regular-season opener at the Dunn Center.

It was only the fifth time in head coach Dave Loos’ 23 seasons the Governors opened at home. The Govs are now 4-1 in those games.

It was also a much better start of the season for the Governors, who needed 10 games last year before coming away with their season’s first victory.

“I appreciate how hard (our guys) played tonight and I think everyone else does too,” Loos said. “That was the most impressive thing is that they played with great effort.”

It was that effort, especially on the defensive end of the floor that allowed the Govs to jump out to that quick 10-point advantage, while also holding the Bulldogs to a mere 38.6 percent shooting from the floor overall – including just two makes out of 24 attempt that came from behind the three-point arc. Austin Peay also outrebounding Samford on the night, 38-35.

“I thought we did a pretty good job of getting out on their shooters,” Loos said. “That led to their poor shooting from three.”

Austin Peay would build its first-half lead out to as many as 16 points, before taking a 38-28 lead into halftime.

Samford would come out after intermission as make a run at the Govs, getting as close as five points, 49-44 at the 13:43 mark, and kept it close for the next eight minutes before junior Will Triggs hit a layup and junior-college transfer Travis Betran followed with a three to make the score 62-51 with 6:44 left.

The Bulldogs would slice it to single digits twice more until freshman A.J. Lynch’s jumper and a three from senior Anthony Campbell with 2:35 remaining put the game out of reach, 69-55.

“It was an impressive game for us until we got a little sloppy in the second half and didn’t finish well, Luckily, we had a cushion and finished it off.”

Austin Peay shot 53.8 percent overall from the floor, while making nine 3s – which was one more three than the Govs made in any single game last season.

“I was happy with how unselfish we played tonight,” Loss said. “We had good inside, outside balance, made some three’s and in addition to that we were able to isolate Will (Triggs) and (sophomore) Chris Freeman and made some good drives to the basket.”

Triggs would lead Austin Peay with 15 points, one of four Govs to reach double figures, – on 6-of-8 shooting — while Freeman chipped in with 11 points off the bench in the post to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.

That would help open up the outside, with Campbell and Betran knocking down three 3s each; with both finishing with 13 points each.

Defensively, Austin Peay was able to limit Samford’s Raijon Kelly to 11 points and Tyler Hood to nine points; although Bulldogs freshman center Tim Williams battled his way to a game-high 23 points.

APSU returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they travel to Bowling Green, Ky., to face Western Kentucky in the first round of the Triple Crown Cancun Challenge.
