Longtime Austin Peay men’s basketball assistant Scott Combs has emerged as a finalist to become the next head coach at Martin Methodist College, a source close to the situation confirmed to Clarksville Sports Network late Monday night.

Combs, who has spent the last 13 seasons as an assistant under Govs head coach Dave Loos, is one of two finalists for the vacant position at the NAIA school in Pulaski, Tenn.

The position became open early last month when MMC head coach Andy Sharpe resigned to take a position at NCAA Division II Southern Arkansas.

According to the source, Combs was initially one of eight targets selected from 90-plus applications before being interviewed as one of the four finalists for the position.

After the interview, Combs has now emerged as one of the school’s two finalists with no further interviews expected.

After a three-year playing career with the Govs from 1996-1999, Combs joined the Govs coaching staff as an administrative assistant before becoming a full-time assistant in 2000.

According to his bio page on the school’s official athletics page, Combs currently serves as APSU’s recruiting coordinator and also helps with the program’s daily operations.

Combs also serves as the director of the Dave Loos Basketball Camps.

Calls to Combs for comment were not immediately returned.

During his 13 seasons as an assistant, Combs has been a part of four regular season Ohio Valley Conference championships and a pair of OVC Tournament championships.

After being named the preseason favorites to win the conference title, the Govs struggled in 2011-2012, finishing a disappointing 12-20 and bowing out in the first round of the OVC Tournament to Jacksonville State.

A decision is likely to be announced by MMC this week – possibly as soon as Wednesday.
