By Tyler Edmondson
The Montgomery Central Indians took on the Creek Wood Red Hawks in Friday night’s game and lost 53-50. Creek Wood won the game when Red Hawks senior Drew Smithson scored the go ahead bucket with 25 seconds to play giving. Smithson came up with a big block on the defensive end, and Rollie Plunkett came up with the loose ball and was fouled. He went on to hit one of two free throws, and the Indians desperation three fell short giving Creek Wood a 53 to 50 win.
The first quarter was capped off with some big plays, including a nice behind the back pass from Isaac Edmondson to Michael Morgan for a thunderous dunk. The Indians’ Brandon Hamilton answered with a dunk of his own, and the Indians led 11-8 after the first quarter.
Midway in the second quarter, following a timeout, the Indians received a technical for having too many men on the floor. The Red Hawks were down 18-15, and then were able to take a 19-18 lead and almost took away Montgomery Central’s momentum. But with time winding down in the first half Ben Drudy banked in a 3-pointer from the corner and gave his Indians a 28-24 lead at the half.
The third quarter was extremely physical, and both teams had key players get into foul trouble. Michael Morgan from Creek Wood picked up his fourth foul, and Brandon Hamilton of Montgomery Central his third foul. Neither side would back down, and at the end of the third quarter Montgomery Central had a 40-36 lead.
The physical play continued in the fourth quarter, and Brandon Hamilton picked up his fifth foul with 4:18 to play in the game. This was a big loss for the Indians because Michael Morgan was able to score in back-to-back trips down the floor after Hamilton’s exit and cut the Indians lead to 50-48 with two minutes to play.
Then Red Hawks forced a turnover, and freshman Isaac Edmondson converted a layup to tie the game at 50. The Indians couldn’t convert on their next trip down the floor, and that’s when Smithson scored the go ahead bucket giving Creek Wood the two point lead.
When asked about his guys effort at the end of the game coach Charles Taylor of Creek Wood said, “It was huge. It just goes to show how much we have improved as a team. These are the games that were getting away from us at the beginning of the year, but we did a great job fighting until the end.”
He was also asked the impact of Brandon Hamilton fouling out of the game and said, “We know at that point we had an advantage and the plan was to get the ball down low. Our plan coming into the game was to attack the basket, and we stuck to our guns and grinded out the win.”

FRANKLIN – Clarksville High picked up its first-round victory in the Class 3A State Dual Championships against Powell today at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.
The Wildcats dropped its first match at 220 pounds but dominated from that point on. Last year’s state runner-up at 145 pounds, Chad Isbell, and teammate Hayden Jordan recorded back-to-back pins in quick fashion. Isbell notched his pin in a 1:22 while Jordan accomplished it in 1:40.
The Wildcats now move into tonight’s 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal match where it will face Soddy Daisy. Soddy is ranked No. 2 in the state and beat Wilson Central 60-3 earlier.
Clarksville High will wrestle in the TSSAA State Dual Wrestling Tournament that gets started today at the Williamson County Expo Center in Franklin.
The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 11 in the latest state high school wrestling pool, will face Powell in their first match in the State Dual Wrestling Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
It’s just that Clarksville High gets a tough draw in the next round if it beats Powell, because that would match the Wildcats up against No. 2 Soddy Daisy, last year’s state tournament’s runner’s up, or Wilson Central at 7 :30 p.m. today.
If Clarksville High wins its second-round match up, it would wrestling in the semifinals at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
If the Wildcats lose to Powell in the first round, they would wrestle in the consolation bracket first round at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
If CHS beats Powell and then loses in the second round to either Soddy Daisy or Wilson Central, it would wrestle in the second round of the consolation bracket at 11 a.m.
